Education And More

Education And More is a Christian nonprofit charitable organization dedicated to helping educate the children and reducing the poverty of the people of the western highlands of Guatemala. We raise funds to provide student and teacher educational supplies, and to provide emergency material and food aid to the students, their families and the communities.

We also provide an outlet for three women’s groups to market their artisan crafts and receive a fair trade wage, a fair daily living wage for their work

Used Laptop Computer / Typewriters

If you or your company has laptops that are no longer used, please consider donating them to Education And More. We want to supply the schools and students in the rural areas of Guatemala with computers and manual typewriters. Many students have no electricity in their homes therefore the manual typewriter is the only choice for them.

Not Surprising Stats!

The statistics concerning education and poverty among the rural indigenous of Guatemala are shocking but Education And More is determined to make a difference!

According to USAID, “57% of Guatemalans live on less than $2 a day and 21.5% live in extreme poverty of less than $1 a day. 49% of the children under 5 have chronic malnutrition.”

“At all levels of schooling, the poor— particularly girls and rural indigenous children of both genders—have less access to basic education. These gender and cultural gaps are most pronounced by comparing the average education levels of urban, non-indigenous males (8.0 years) with rural, indigenous females (1.2 years). Two thirds of Maya first graders are taught by teachers who neither understand nor speak the children’s maternal languages.”

The families and students need help to be able to attend school and go on to higher education so that they are able to compete in the marketplace but malnutrition stands in the way of learning much of the time . According to UNICEF “Some 75,000 severely malnourished children have been identified, a consequence of three simultaneous emergencies: chronic poverty, drought and the coffee crisis. Some 67 per cent of indigenous children suffer from chronic malnutrition. More children at younger ages are entering the labour force.”

Education And More works in the western highlands around Lake Atitlan where there is much extreme poverty within the indigenous Mayan communities. Check out our website and help where you can! www.educationandmore.org

Tierra Linda Guatemala

Tierra Linda (Pretty Land) is a small village near Lake Atitlan in the western highlands of Guatemala that is extremely poor. There are no paved roads or streets in the town and since the village sits at the end of the road there are no through roads. Most of the people live in adobe mud brick homes and live a subsistence life on meager incomes thru agriculture. The native language in Tierra Linda is Kakchiquel – an indigenous Mayan language and many of the adults do not speak Spanish nor are able to read or write. The children learn Spanish if they attend school.

The women of Tierra Linda have formed into a women’s group and have started a breakfast program in the little school with the help of an organization called Mayan Families. Many of the children are malnourished in this area and this breakfast program gives them a nutritious meal of ‘mosh’ which is like oatmeal with lots of vitamins and minerals. Often times the children only receive tortillas for supper so this breakfast is vital to them!

With the help of some international donors the little village was able to begin building 2 new classrooms. The men of the village have been supplying the labor to build the new classrooms but furnishings are still needed — teacher desks, a table and bookshelf for each classroom is needed and Education And More will be checking on this project during the January trip. The school desperately needs a library for books for the children to read since there are none in the village. Most children need school supplies to begin school in January. One volunteer told us that she saw a mother looking for paper in the town dump to glue them together to make a little notebook so her child could go to school with it.

Education And More will be donating Spanish language books to start a library and also will be delivering school supplies to the students in January. Won’t you help this project? Ask your women’s group, Sunday School or church to help collect school supplies or collect donations to purchase the needed items. We appreciate all your help with educating these little ones in Guatemala!

How To Help Educate The Children

Education And More is a Christian nonprofit charitable organization dedicated to helping educate the children and reducing the poverty of the people of the western highlands of Guatemala. We raise funds to provide student and teacher educational supplies, and to provide emergency material and food aid to the students, their families and the communities.

We also provide an outlet for three women’s groups to market their artisan crafts and receive a fair trade wage, a fair daily living wage for their work. Our website showcases their artisan crafts which are available for purchase. All profits from the sales are returned to Guatemala to further our mission of educating the children.

Ways to help Education And More and the people of Guatemala:
· Purchase artisan crafts and weavings --- We have purchased these artisan crafts at a fair wage to the producer so they are able to feed their family, educate their children and have dignity in their work.
· Contribute --- Every donation helps us to give a child an education, supply books for libraries, and provide emergency food to families. We are a charitable 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization—all donations are tax-exempt according to IRS code.
· Schedule a presentation or talk for your organization --- We give presentations about education and poverty in Guatemala and our work among the poor in the Lake Atitlan highlands. It is a way to see, touch and learn about poverty in another country.
· Host a craft showing --- Volunteer to host a showing and sale of crafts in your home or office.
· We have fundraising opportunities for school or church groups that not only help your school or group here in the USA but also will help the artisan and the schoolchildren of Guatemala. Ask about our School To School Connection and connect you child’s school with children in Guatemala.

Education And Children in Guatemala

Our organization is dedicated to helping the children and their families in the western highlands of Guatemala around Lake Atitlan.

Recent statistics show that nearly 76% of the indigenous population in the Guatemalan highlands live in poverty ($1 -$2 a day) and 49% of children under 5 years of age have chronic malnutrition. Although the government of Guatemala says that education is compulsory thru the 6th grade, a recent study shows that only about 80% of the children are enrolled in primary school. Often parents can afford to send children only for two to three years and if the family can send only one or two of the children they will send the boys and keep the girls at home. In the rural areas of Guatemala in 2004 the female literacy rate was 63% and the male literacy rate was 77%

We believe our Lord asks us to help our neighbors wherever they are and we also believe that education is the path out of poverty.

We love to talk about educating the children in Guatemala and our work there so post your message!
