2) Donate to help support our climate change projects around the world
3) Join us in the field as a volunteer
4) If you're in New England, volunteer on on one of our local climate change volunteering opportunities
5) Invite all your friends to join our Beat the Heat "Cause" page on Facebook here:

Wallace J. Nichols visits Earthwatch
J Nichols loves turtles. And that's an understatement - he's so passionate about turtles that he even has one tattooed on his arm!
J has been working with with Earthwatch since he first got funding from us for his doctoral research on sea turtles in Baja, and we always love to have him stop by and talk with us about his work and tell field stories.
J spoke at the kickoff to our Beat the Heat Campaign last night at the Museum of Science in Boston: view link
and today he came to the Earthwatch office for lunch. I guarantee that you only have to listen to him talk about working with the Baja fishermen and sea turtles for 5 minutes, and you'll want to get out there yourself!
He's currently a research on our Black Sea Turtles project: view link
Have any of you been on one of his teams? Anyone signed up for one?

The Great Turtle Race
Just a quick note to let you know about the Great Turtle Race a neat vehicle to inform and get people interested in the plight of the Pacific Leatherback. You can check out the race (sattelite tagged leatherbacks) at www.greatturtlerace.org I am a teacher (in the last week of "teaching" and checking in on the turtles is now part of our morning routine. We also checked out TOPPS site, where you can watch the movement of Pacific pelagics.

J. Nichols article
Wallace J. Nichols just published a great article in the San Jose Mercury News about saving the oceans: view link
If you don't know who he is, take a look at the Earthwatch blog post I just added on him:

He's a very interesting person - if you love the ocean, you should definitely know about him!

Thoughtful article in Slate
I found this piece to be one of the most thoughtful pieces of environment writing I've read online in many recent months--possibly years. It asks good questions, and challenges you to think.
What do you think about the sea lion and the salmon?

Florida Ocean Lover
Hi all & was so excited to find this group.
I've been here in Florida more than 13 years now and in less than two weeks, I'm moving back to the beach!
Here in Melbourne Beach & Indialantic we have a "turtle" season and I'll be back joining our local Turtle group as soon as I settle in, in time for the season. I'll get pictures, when I can, and pass on our local success (and maybe not so successful) highlights.
Look forward to sharing and learning from the group!

Deep ocean expedition
Great idea, Supergnat. I agree that it would be a very interesting expedition to explore the deep ocean at the hydrothermal vent sites. There is so much to learn and new species are still discovered on almost every expedition. It would attract folks of many different interests, from materials science to technology to zoology and even volcanology. All fun stuff, depending on your interest level.
A new Model?
Ditto Supergnat,
Wouldn't it be great if Earthwatch led the way with a new model- combine the participatory research model they're so good at with the WHOI, HBOI, NOAA's OOE research & exploration model. Their strategic climate partnership with HSBC could be key. Imagine this new concept led by the R/V "Climate Warrior", a carbon neutral research/exploration vessel financed by HSBC. While the really deep stuff might not be economically viable for a few more years, the 0-600 meter range would be make for some really fascinating expeditions.
Sign me up!
PS: this is a project I'm working on, btw.
