CSS Web Design

I love working in web design, and am committed to conquering CSS in 2007. I belong to a group of people who are trying to learn CSS together, but we have no guru, so we are stumbling along in the dark, trying our best. Perhaps this venue will help move us along!

Let's Get CSSiggy

Ok, so I'm making up words. Haven't had the right amount of caffeine this morning.

We need to get this group active.

You are all aware of the CSS Zen Garden, right? If not, please check out the link. The gist of the site is that ALL the design is done in an external style sheet. ALL. Check out those designs! They're awesome!

So I'm going to upload a file in our files area - and I'd like y'all to play with it - externally.

First, let's make the text and layout look flashy. We'll get in deeper after we exhaust this one.

Good coding, everyone.

:) J

Howdy

Just joined Eons today. Was pleasantly surprised that there was a CSS group. I have two websites. The first one that I started in 2005 is www.humoretc.com. It has been quite a learning experience as I knew nothing at all when I started it. I generally only dabble in CSS when I'm in a really creative mood and want to accomplish something in particular. I de-tabled the index page about a year and a half ago just to see if I could do it. The rest of the pages still have tables.

Anyway, I look forward to getting to know all of you. I have never really known anyone with any kind of web design experience so this will be great!

Playing Defensivey and Having Fun

Well, I made another style-sheet based page. This one is a hybrid (style sheets and tables because I fold my blog using table code.). The style sheet also accomodates the portion of the blog copied to Eons.

My style sheet designs are all coming out looking like flocked wallpaper. My table designs come out light and airy due to using a ring table with a repeating object. The style sheet pads the text cells.

I'm not sure how to produce a nice bordered design with a style sheet. For now I'm enjoying the novelty of heavy work but I look at those table sites and think they still have such charm. I definitely need to learn more.

I guess I'm the "Guru"

Hi all,

I've been developing Web sites since 1996. You can review some of my work inside my company Web site, L.T. Creations, LLC. which you will find is 100% CSS. It's a new design just completed the first part of February 2008.

In 2000 I began using CSS, when I created my company. Since then I have moved far beyond most in that I "hate" using tables and I don't use anything but Notepad to write all of the code for the pages you see and the CSS used to manipulate the code. I don't use "hacks" or "workarounds" for the various browsers. I have learned how to code in such a manner to satisfy all of the top browsers. Because there are so few using anything but Internet Explorer (IE), Firefox (FF or Mozilla), Opera (my favorite), or Safari (sorry Apple...but you failed on that development), I'm not concerned about checking to see if anything else can render pages correctly. However, designing for these top 4 "usually" satisfies 99.9% of whatever someone uses to surf the Internet.

Somewhere in 2006 I moved to 100% CSS Web development and find now that it's "so" much more simple to maintain a CSS site. There is a "huge" advantage to using CSS if you are into Search Engine Optimization (SEO), which I am. I'm also an SEO specialist.

So, here I am. Opening the "flood-gates" by offering my knowledge. I "can" be very technical, but usually I provide information in very easy to understand terminology.

My Website

It started at a "vanity page" provided by Starband, which was the only internet available. I cleaned up the code redundancies a bit. I got into cut-n-paste HTML, then HTML online tutorials. By trial-and-error I achieved the look I want, using Notepad and Filezilla, but somehow the Arial font has disappeared off MSIE 7 at least.

I am back online, not just relying on "coffee shop" free wireless. I do have a host that has no advertising. I feel I am ready to put more time into it.

I think I want to "add" a CSS DIV on the right hand side, if it will "behave". The idea is to have the page scroll only the vertical scroll, but if you have a big display you will be able to see the "added" photos with "embedded links" on the added right side big display screen real estate.

In this way, my website will still display for practically everyone worldwide... and the power-users will have some nice "pics".

Is this possible? view link

I already know how to HTML code a link in a photo. I got an example at HTML Coding Discussion.

I Have to Show This to Somebody

OK, I just built my first usable all div page. That means a style sheet controlls the placement of everything. I'm using absolute position defined by precent. The page scrolls vertically but NOT horizontally. The reason you can't see the actual page is that it is a "rogue page" and a local mount on my machine at work.

I put this on my C drive and make it my default so that I have access to links I use to do my work, my do-list, and a seven week calendar. The old version of this page used complex tables. The style sheet will make things much simpler to update, especially since I "redecorate" every seven weeks. The other great thing about a style sheet is that it allows a very busy background. This page works in both IE6 and Firefox.

Here are the screen shots of my new page. Click on the thumbnails to see the two halves of the page at full size.

Proud of my new style sheet creation

This (above) is the top half of the page.

This (above) is the bottom half of the page. One screen shot is from IE6 and the other is from Firefox.

And here is a copy of the style sheet I used saved as a text file.

This page may not be to everyone's taste, but I rather like it. Please let me know what you think.

The default EONS Profile Stylesheet

Any one wanting to do custom CSS needs to see the default EONS profile style sheet. All custom CSS done to your profile overrides this sheet. This default EONS style sheet handles the entire layout of your page.

The default style sheet is long and byzantine. There has to be a simpler way to build a multi-square web page. I know I wouldn't build it like this.

This is the link to the stylesheet. I turned it into a text file to make it easy to view and download.

If you want to use this to alter your profile. You'll also need to see your profile by viewing its source code. This will tell you how the style sheet works.

Finding what to change is still hit or miss. That is why the boxes on my profile don't sit even. Good luck and enjoy.

Maybe I can help?

I started designing tableless, CSS websites about 6 years ago. For a while it was a quite rewarding (although at times, frustrating and challenging).

After a while, it was just too much to keep up with all the newest developments so currently I'm not doing new designs, only maintaining the old ones. You can see them here if you're interested. They render properly (and hopefully still do) on IE 5, 5.5, 6 and 7, Firefox, Opera, Safari (Mac), Konqueror (and other Linux browsers), Netscape (even Netscape 4x which was quite a challenge). All the html and the CSS validates at the W3C.

Even though I'm not currently designing, I do have a lot of resources filed away here and there that might be helpful if any of you run into a problem.
