Cheaper Than Lipo

If you don't regard purging as a shortcut for getting into last year's jeans, if you've learned that your girth does not reflect your worth, if you like to play, you like yourself, and you seek the joy in the journey, then come on in and join us, and have some fun getting healthy!

Please, no solicitors! We love to share new ideas, but will not tolerate a hustle!

Latest group announcement

Let's do this good thing together!

Size two? Who needs it. I would be happy just getting my booty into those jeans that have been hanging in the back of my closet since the Carter administration. And I know that being smart is the only way I ever do it.

Fad diets and quick fixes just tend to break things in the long run. Intake and output are what got us here, and they'll be what get us back where we belong.

So, no grapefruit fasts. No colon cleanses. No cabbage soup (everybody together, now: WHEW). Just mindfulness and moderation, tremendous honesty, and the support of good friends who share the same challenges and the same high hopes.

PLEASE consult with your physician first, before embarking on ANY new diet or exercise program. Your doctor should always be the final authority, no matter how good the advice you receive online sounds.

Also, stop by our sister group, Slim Pickins, and share your recipes!

Finally, organization and accountability are what we're all about, so prepare for theme days! It'll be fun, I promise.

Sunday - Assess and Deploy
Monday - Recipes
Tuesday - I Said No To:
Wednesday - In The Zone
Thursday - Knowledge is Power
Friday - Our Weekly Challenge
Saturday - Everybody needs a day off - this is ours!

We're going to be glorious!

About flaxseed

I've been singing the praises of milled (or ground) flax ever since this group has been in existance, and incorporate two tablespoonsful of it into my daily diet. I found a great article this morning on Sparkpeople, explaining just why it's so good for us.

You may want to give it a try!

Friday, 5/16/08 - our weekly challenge: SWEAT!!!

Yeah, that's right. I said sweat. Oh, stop whimpering, already!

It's a smart challenge. It's a pro-active challenge. And it'll help us reset our metabolism so that we don't have to skimp for the rest of our lives to shop for clothes sizes without X's in them.

Seriously, we can't forget this vital part of the equation. The only thing that's going to burn the existing fat on us is some form of aerobic activity. Cutting calories will keep us from adding new fat, and we'll loss water too, and to say nothing of lean muscle mass. And what's that going to do for us, that new higher fat to muscle ratio? It's going to reduce our metabolism, because fat mass burns fewer calories than muscle mass, making it even easier for us to gain weight. That is the LAST thing we want to have happen! That is why we've yo-yo'd after every single diet we've ever put ourselves on, because we left out that one essential thing.

I don't know about you, but when I do the shimmy, parts of me continue moving long after I've decided to stop. This is not a good thing. And this is something that I can do something about. I'm starting slowly - by walking, by pulling weeds, by getting outside more. And I recently joined Gold's Gym as well.

Make a plan, my friends - and then watch it pay off!

My weekly I suck post

Also serving as a blanket welcome to all new members!

My session with the personal trainer

It wasn't what I expected.

Now, mind you, we joined the health club two nights before. We shelled out fourteen hundred bucks between the two of us, to pay for two years up front. We gave an extensive history that evening. And the whole purpose of setting up that session with the trainer was so that we could learn how to use the machines correctly.

But no. We were taken into a room and given an hour long lecture about nutrition (what part of used to be a nurse and nutrition counselor did you miss?), after which a pitch was thrown in for their own line of supplements and dietary aids, about commitment (what part of fourteen hundred dollar investment did you miss?), and about the benefits of personal training, after our body fat composition was taken and recorded. Personal training which, incidentally, will cost an extra seventy bucks an hour.

Uh. No. She's going to show us how the machines work on Monday evening, and then that's it.

I'm more than a little bit annoyed.

I'll put these in the reply, so, if you have dial-up, it won't slow your computer down so much!

Tuesday, 5/13/08 - I Said No To:

GRRRRR. I had this written this morning. I hit send. I got a picture of snoozles snoozing. After that, no matter what I did, I couldn't get eons to come back up before I had to leave for work. I was hoping that the post went through. No such luck, though!

So, here we go again.

This week I said no to beer cheese soup. That doesn't sound like much, but for me, it's huge. My daughter works in a sports bar in the same complex where our clinic is located. About twice a week, they serve the best beer cheese soup on the planet - thick, piping hot, and just exploding with flavor. It's very hard for me to resist this stuff come lunchtime.

This week I did, though. And it didn't kill me. I'm pretty proud of myself for that!

So, what cravings did you beat down to quivering submission?

Well, we finally did it!

Allen and I finally joined a health club!

A nice young man (God, I sound like such a biddy!) from Gold's Gym came by the clinic today to see if we could maybe do some mutual promoting. We talked a bit, and I made an appointment to go there after work.

He gave us quite the deal. We're now paid in full members for the next two years. Allen being tighter than the bark on a tree, I thought he was going to shit pencils when the numbers crunching started, but I reminded him that he's only six months post-heart attack, and that this investment is pretty much a guarantee that we'll both stay on track.

I'm pleased. They've got it all there, cardio machines, resistance machines, free weights, a pool, classes, a steam room, you name it. I'll be missing the Idol results show on Wednesday for our first session with a trainer. (Thank God for VCRs, huh?)

Anybody else belong to a club? How do you feel about your investment?
