Dog Swept Up, Killed By NYC Street Sweeper
THIS IS JUST AN AWFUL STORY< BREAKS MY HEART
Dog Swept Up, Killed By NYC Street Sweeper NEW YORK (CBS) ¯ A Bronx man is
devastated after his dog was swept up and killed by a city street sweeper
Thursday morning.
The incident occurred at Randall and St. Lawrence avenues in the Soundview
section of the borough. Witnesses say the sweeper came speeding down the
street, swerving to avoid a speed bump, before yanking the dog, a Boston
terrier named Ginger, right out of its leash.
"The animal was like a family member in my house," said Robert Machin, the
dog's owner.
Machin is completely torn over losing Ginger, and he can't believe how it
happened.
"Just being dragged into that machinery and killed in that fashion,"
said Machin.
When Machin broke the news to his mother, Carmen Canizares, he says she
nearly collapsed.
"You have no idea, you have no idea," she said.
Ginger and her mate, Buster, were both on leashes on the side of the street
when the sweeper approached. Witnesses say the vehicle was moving at about
30 or 40 mph, must faster than the 10 mph it's supposed to go, and that the
driver was listening to headphones.
"He came so close to the car that he sucked the dog off the leash,"
said Isamar Maldonado, who saw the horrifying incident. "He was not paying
attention, and while you're on duty you're not supposed to [have headphones]
on."
Witnesses say they chased the truck for blocks, but when he finally stopped
they say he refused to shut down the mechanical broom.
"We couldn't believe that man could be driving that fast and sweep up the
little dog like he was a piece of garbage or something, and then don't even
say 'I'm sorry,'" said Maldonado.
The Department of Sanitation issued a statement regarding the incident and
said it will investigate.
"Yesterday mornings incident involving a dog being swept up by a Department
of Sanitation mechanical broom, while on cleaning duties in the Bronx, was a
rare and unfortunate accident. Sanitation has offered condolences to the
family," a spokeswoman for the department said.
"It's just a traumatic, terrible thing," said Machin.
The driver of the sweeper continues to sweep streets in that neighborhood
while the investigation is ongoing.

Sollie's Continuing Saga
This morning was a new additon to Sollie's tale. Although he still shies away from being petted by anyone but me he has begun to interact with others like my grandkids and my daughter. Yesterday my daughter was not feeling well and had to go to the doctor. After she came back, she was laying on the couch and sleeping (from the meds they gave her) and while she was napping Sollie went over and smelled her mouth and gave her a small lick on the check. Of course she is not a dog person so she told me to tell him to stop doing that. Hey to me that is good news he has accepted her as his; even though he does not want her to know that yet. Well, this morning when she got back from taking the kids to school, he started jumping on her and trying to throw his toys for her to play. When she would not do that he smelled her hand, looked at her and went and played with his toys alone. To most people this would sound normal for most pets, but for Sollie this is an absolute milestone. He has always been very skiddish and acted badly at first when the kids came to stay here. He still jumps a little and certain noises has him jumping and racing for a safe place, mostly in my lap, but now he just moves out of the way. One needs to understand, when Sollie met my sister, she tried to get him to move on his leash (he still hunches and won't walk on a leash very well) he literally sprang about a foot in the air and two feet away from her. He still scares himself sometimes when he steps and feels something near him. I think this has to do with him not learning how to work with his blind eye. Now he is better because his surroundings are easy for him and things in the house are stabler and rarely change for him. The hardest thing for Sollie right now is having a little boy in the house and trying to play, during which he gets so excited he nips the hand of my grandson. I have to get after him about the nipping so he is gradually getting the hint, but he gets himself so wound up and excited he tends to forget. Last night he also reached another milestone for him, he allowed my daughter to sit on the bed while he was in it....amazing lol. It is a lot of work, but well worth it. :)
Our Abby
These dogs have GOT to be the most photogenic in the world. Do they ever take a bad picture?
I know our Abby is too, too cute.

Sollie's new picture
I finally got another picture of Sollie, but normally he is a real clown......until I want a picture and then had to chase him through the house to get him back into the vicinity of the camera. He always looks so harried when he gets a picture done. Unfortunately all I have is a small eyeball camera that is attached to the tower or I could catch him unaware. Will eventually buy a digital camera but for now this one will have to do...sigh.
Peticure
Hi I oredered the Peticure for my dogs so I can cut their nails. I haven't gotten it yet, but I was wondering if anyone has gotten one and used it and if they like it?
