Offensive Compliments

Apparently the insulting compliments keep on coming, and DiversityInc's readers continue to share their worst with us. Today's winner in the "You're so articulate" category is "You sound like a real professional person over the phone." Then there was the coworker who attributed a biracial man's intelligence to his Asian half. Read on to find out what other backhanded praise our readers have experienced--and if you have some of your own offensive compliments to share, click here and tell us!
Well, this is really a "compliment" given to a friend of mine but it's real gem; it insults two groups at once. My is friend African American and Korean. One day at work at a prestigous Midwestern University he was helping a co-worker with a computer problem. After saving the day the co-worker asked him just what race he was anyway. When he divulged that he was half Asian the co-worker said 'oh, so THAT'S why you're so smart!'
I am a Latina immigrant married to a Latino immigrant.
I was a substitute teacher in CT, when a colleague asked me about my plans to get a CT Teacher certificate. I told her I already had two masters and also shared my academic plans for the future. My colleague replied, 'WOW! YOU ARE AMBITIOUS! ARE YOU MARRIED TO AN AMERICAN?'
The most offensive compliment I've received is when I was taking the SAT, the proctor said, 'I bet you're going to do really well on the Math section since you're Asian.'
Being a black man working in a corporate environment, I spend a lot of time on the phone with colleagues. When they meet me in person, I usually hear things like: 'I would never have guessed that you look like you do' or 'You sound like a real professional person over the phone.' It's as if speaking and conducting myself professionally over the phone is an oddity for a black person.
I wasn't on the receiving end of this one, but a previous boss of mine (a Chinese-American woman with an 'American' first and last name) was: 'You don't look like the person I was expecting.' My boss handled it well, though; I imagine by that point in her career, she was used to that sort of thing.
'You don't look like the type that would be married to a black guy.' What they mean is, I look like a classy white woman who white men would be attracted to, so why would I be with a black man? Definitely offensive.
"Is that your hair?"
"You don't act like most people in your race."
I have had people say to me many times: 'You are so pretty to be black' or 'You are pretty to be so dark.' This is the ultimate insult, that says to me I and others with dark skin are considered ugly. This is very hurtful.
Another comment/situation that I will never forget and I have shared with others, is the time a white female colleague asked if she could borrow one of my African costumes for an international day her church was having. I was totally insulted because she was calling my African clothing a costume (like a Halloween costume!). Because whites don't usually connect themselves to an ethnic group they have no concept of others who want to celebrate and embrace their heritage or ethnic background. Thanks for allowing me to share!"
'You don't [look/act/sound] blind.' I have no idea what that means. Am I supposed to walk around singing "Superstition" or "Georgia on my Mind" or something?
A colleague in a meeting was trying to compliment my hair style and said, "You have Asian hair!" Since I'm African-American, I don't know whether this comment or "You sound Caucasian over the phone." has offended me more.
You know, you don't sound like a black person - you sound much smarter.

schedule
Sounds like you got a great schedule lined out! I like your photo gallery. I would have loved to have had some more parenting techniques when I was a little younger. My girls have turned out well and they're both in college now but I'm sure most mothers always think they could have done a little better. I never could get my girls to clean up their room or anything else.
Also, I hope someone will post a recipe for bean pie. If I've had some bean pie, it's been a long time but it sounds good.

Celebrating Mothers: Worshipping the Black Madonna
One of the most sacred icons of the Catholic Church is the Black Madonna and Christ child. Statues representing her are in Europe's most venerated shrines and cathedrals. Each year, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims ritually humble themselves before the image of Mary and her child Jesus at Black Madonna sites throughout France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Portugal and other Catholic countries.
Why do we not hear more about the Black Madonna? Pilgrims throughout the ages have visited Black Madonna sites and left inspired, confident, relieved, or healed of their afflictions. Today, there are over 300 documented Black Madonna sites in France alone. Sometimes Black Madonna statues are hidden away in vaults, while the public is shown Madonnas with European features.
There are theories that the dark representation of the skin color of the statues is dues to the materials used or changes in the material over time or my personal favorite --- candle soot. Give me a break. The Black Madonna is black because she is black

Mob of Black Males Attacks Whites
Wow, it seems that a mob of 20 to 30 young black males attacked whites in Mt. Clemens, Michigan. Click here to read more about it. A few teens have been arrested and authorities are looking for more. One man was beaten to near unconscious.
There is surveillance video of a group of young men attacking one man at a gas station convenience store. The man in the video did not suffer serious bodily harm but it's not pretty to watch and you can't see what happened to his friend.
This is the kind of behavior that makes it bad for blacks period. The folks attacked in Mt. Clemens were white but the truth is, given the inclination, those young men might attack blacks also. Either way it's wrong.
There is no excuse for such terrorist behavior on the video; the audio of the call to 911 is even worse. The police will get to the bottom of this for sure. The perpetrators in the case of the severely injured man can face life in prison.

Surprise…Surprise…R. Kelly Found Not Guilty
R. Kelly was found not guilty. We should have expected that, I guess. For the last six years, Kelly's attorneys successfully delayed the case from going before a jury.
In spite of the fact that Kelly is a pedophile; the jury found him guilty of child pornography. The alleged victim denied she was the girl on the tape although friends and relatives said it was her. Kelly's lawyers injected doubt that the man in the tape was Kelly. This is all such a shame.
R. Kelly's behavior reflects a pattern of his attraction to young females; folks seem to forget he married the late singer Aaliyah when she was just 15 and he, 27.
No doubt someone was likely paid off because of this trial. The description of the acts on the videotape is disgusting as are other allegations of Kelly's sexual relations with young girls.
The truth is Kelly knows his involvement with the alleged victim. He knows if the other allegations of his involvement with young girls are true. He has to live with the truth and the truth will either set him free or imprison him in his shame.

Florida Man Defends Plans to Fly World’s Largest C
Plans are under way for an organization in the Tampa, Florida area to fly the world's largest confederate flag on property at a busy intersection near I-75.
A Confederate heritage group called the Sons of Confederate Veterans plans to fly the 30-by-50 flag atop a 139-foot pole, the highest the FAA will allow. The flag should be ready to fly in 2009.

Lancaster, TX elects first black mayor
Marcus Knight, 33, took over the leadership Lancaster, TX on Monday. Lancaster is located in southern Dallas County. Knight's father, Richard, was Dallas' first black city manager some 22 years ago.
Lancaster is the largest Texas city where blacks make up a majority of the population; the shift occurred during the '90s between 1990 and 2000
