Message from Barack: Did You See Michelle?
Barack just sent out this email...
Dear Friend -
I am so lucky to be married to the woman who delivered that speech last night.
Michelle was electrifying, inspiring, and absolutely magnificent. I get a lot of credit for the speech I gave at the 2004 convention -- but I think she may have me beat.
You have to see it to believe it.
And make sure to forward this email to your friends and family -- they'll want to see it too.

You really don't want to miss this.
And I'm not just saying that because she's my wife -- I truly believe it was the best speech of the campaign so far.

I appreciate all of your replies to my post about the Electoral College! It's good to know that I'm not the only one who's thought of that. I just worry that even tho the members of the Elector College are supposed to cast their votes for the winner of the popular election, there could still be some that won't be able to get past their own personal predjudices and will cast their vote for McCain, in spite of their obligations.
I sincerely hope that doesn't happen! It's way past time for a change, "Business as Usual" has come way too close to putting this great country in the toilet!
BTW--if any of you out there are artists, I've got an idea for a great politcal cartoon, but I'm lacking in the artistic talent to create it. So, feel free to take my idea and run with it (if you think it's any good, that is?)
Picture this, the American public are standing in front of the White House. McCain is standing out on the steps, with Toto pulling aside a curtain. GW is behind the curtain, pulling McCains strings, while McCain says, "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain . . . . ."
So, what do ya'll think?

Republicans, stop calling Obama elitist
By Bill Maher
Because the real reason you don't like him is that he's smarter than you.
Americans are so narcissistic that our candidates have to be just like us. That's why George Bush is president. And that's where the McCain camp gets its campaign strategy: Paint Obama as cocky and arrogant and wait for America to vote him off, like the black guy in every reality show. A black president? Half of Pennsylvania isn't ready for black quarterbacks. Forget Obama, they think Will Smith needs to be taken down a peg.

A little tidbit for your consideration
(This is a little something I found posted on one of the Pubbie groups by a former member of this group who recently made an "I'm leaving this group because it's so biased" post. See if you can guess who it was.
One of my Republican buddies went over to one of the Obama groups and read the replies to a post I put up about leaving the group. His opinion? 'Nice collection of zealots and assorted nuts, with a few really serious and sincere people.' Well, I would say there are a lot more zealots and supports than nuts but.....
Anyway, he did some digging and came up with these stats. He looked at the last 100 posts and skimmed the replies until he found a negative comment, and counted them up. Very interesting:
Negative posts (generally against Repubs) 59%
Positive posts about Obama 29%
Positive posts with negative replies 18%
Fluff; neither pos or neg 5%
Now here's the most telling one of all.....
Posts about Sarah Palin 45%
Palin is getting so much press it's unbelievable. More posts are devoted to her than to Obama! Wow! Keeping her in the news is excellent!

Senator Boxer on the McCain Acceptance Speech
Statement of U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer on the McCain Acceptance Speech

Last night at the Republican National Convention, John McCain used the word "fight" more than 40 times in his speech.
In the 16 years that we have served together in the Senate, I have seen John McCain fight.
I have seen him fight against raising the federal minimum wage 14 times.
I have seen him fight against making sure that women earn equal pay for equal work.
I have seen him fight against a women's right to choose so consistently that he received a zero percent vote rating from pro-choice organizations.
I have seen him fight against helping families gain access to birth control.
I have seen him fight against Social Security, even going so far as to call its current funding system "an absolute disgrace."
And I saw him fight against the new GI Bill of Rights until it became politically untenable for him to do so.
John McCain voted with President Bush 95 percent of the time in 2007 and 100 percent of the time in 2008 -- that's no maverick.
We do have two real fighters for change in this election -- their names are Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

I adore Barbara Boxer. In case you haven't seen these from February of '07, Senator Boxer was celebrating her 30th anniversary in public life and she asked Barack Obama to be there. She talks about the 'Audacity of Hope', and says, "When I look at him, my friend and colleague that you're about to meet, I see in him what has worked right with America, I see the future of America." She tells them that when she asked him to be there a year before, he didn't know he'd be running for president, and she didn't know he'd be running for president, and she sure didn't know that so many people would show up to see him. 1400! lol. Seems funny now that 1400 was considered a large showing.
She also shares that she decided to go into politics in 1972 because she was concerned with her children's future. In 1972 women did not have the right to choose. Roe v Wade did not become the law of the land until the next year. (Think about that. If McCain/Palin have their way, this country will return to the days of back alley abortions and coat hangers. Just one of the scariest things about that pair.)
She then quotes some lines from "Pass it on" an old labor song....
"Freedom, freedom is a hard won thing
You've got to work for it, fight for it
day and night for it
and every generation got to win it again"
and then says she's about to bring on to the stage that next generation.

The Guide to Palinguage Vol.2 - People's Edition
This is the Vol. 2 of The Guide to the Conservative Palinguage. I'm calling this one the People's Edition because you, the people, have obviously been taking AP courses in talking Conservative. I've been slammed with responses. Enough that I can promise you there will be future volumes. Along with some of mine, I've mixed in a few of yours for everybody's linguistic pleasure.
Ready? Let's begin!
If you get 18 million people to vote for you in a national presidential primary, you're a "phoney." Get 100,000+ people to vote you governor of the 47th most populous state in the Union, you're "well loved."
SoyAA says: If you are biracial and born in a state not connected to the lower 48, America needs darn near 2 years and 3 major speeches to "get to know you." If you're white and from a state not connected to the lower 48, America needs 36 minutes and 38 seconds worth of an acceptance speech to know you're "one of us."
If you give your wife a dap on stage, it's actually a "terrorist fist jab." If your daughter licks her palm so that she can slick down your youngest child's hair on national TV it's an "adorable moment." (Seriously, forget about abstinence only, teach these folks some grooming skills).
DTD SAYS: If your pastor rails against inequality in the United States of America, you're an "extremist." If your pastor welcomes a sermon by a member of Jews for Jesus who preaches that the killing of Jews by terrorists is a lesson to Jews that they must convert to Christianity, you're a "fundamentalist."
If you're a black man and you use a scholarship to get into college, then work your way up to being the president of the Harvard Law Review, you're "uppity." If you're a conservative and your parents pay your way to Hawaii Pacific University . . . you only have four more schools to attend over the next five years before you somehow manage to graduate (it might be five more schools over the next five years. No one has yet verified whether or not Palin was actually ever registered at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. But, you know how shady people are who ever attended any kind of school in Hawaii).
SeanOcali says: If you're 18, white, and get a 16 year old girl pregnant "life happens." If you're 18, black, and impregnate a 16 year old girl, you're a "registered sex offender."
If you spend 18 months building a campaign around the theme of "Change," it's just "empty rhetoric." If one week before your party's national convention you SUDDENLY make your candidacy about "Change," that's "red meat."
And your last lesson for the day:
If you are a Democrat, an Independent, or even a moderate Republican, if you're female, male, white, black, Asian, Hispanic, bi-racial, multi-ethnic, or GLBT, if you're a Jew, Gentile, Muslim, agnostic or atheist -- "Yes, we can!"
If you're a pitbull with lipstick from Alaska, "Yup, yup!"

A change to work on NOW!!
I just caught part of Barack's speech to the AARP convention, and I actually stood in my living room and applauded what I heard!! OK, somebody who wants to change how things are done in DC--no more closed doors, no more payoffs and special interests! All Right!
But my husband (who also supports Barack) made a comment that really shook me up. He said, "I think Obama will win the popular vote, but lose the election because of the electoral college."
My heart just sank. That is soooo possible, since there's no guarantee that the electoral college will vote the way their state's voters tell them!
The need for the electoral college is long gone. It's way past time to do away with it, so there's no longer any doubt as to who actually wins the election. The average person nowadays has enough information available to make an informed decision when they vote, they don't need someone else to (maybe) do it for them!
Call me crazy, but when I vote, I want MY vote to count, not somebody else's!
Is there any way we can work to get this changed now?
It's really got me worried!

Remember when they said Obama was a Muslim?
As Obama supporters, we know more than anyone how a rumor can spread and people start forwarding things that might be incorrect.
We were furious when that happened to Obama.
Let's help each other check things out before assuming what we read is correct-- and help each other keep our enthusisam focused on legitimate concerns.
There is a pattern emerging that Palin takes her exercise of power over the line. To me, right now, it is murky and far from clear.
The real horror, to me, is that the American public knows so little about someone running for VP!!!
Maybe because we dont know, there is an understandable urgency to 'fill in the blanks.'
But lets do that with our brains, not our emotion.
Maybe the other side needs lies and rumor to win.
However, as an Obama supporter, I think we will win with the truth.
