The most painful bicycle race of my life!
The United States Cycling Federation state road race championships were held this past weekend in Ocala, FL. Here is the way I described the race to my son:
I had the hardest race of my life today. There was a ringer in my age group who came in from Puerto Rico to contest the event. He had just aged up, and thought he would garner himself a state championship by coming to Florida. He was the typical 120 pound rider with a very nice Litespeed bike. The 40 plus women that we rode with fielded incredible teams including three very strong racers from HerbalLife, including the gal who won the Tour of the Bahamas earlier in the year. Two other teams were there with strong riders.
We instituted a breakaway fairly early on, but it was fairly large. 6 women, I and the guy from PR. I did lots of work, and was leading the peloton at the start finish line in every lap. At one point, I helped the HerbalLife girls chase down a solo breakaway from Team American Classic. The guy from PR was doing absolutely no work. He would continually suck wheel, and would do no work. The girls mentioned it to me a couple of times. I mentioned to the gal who had won the tour of the Bahamas that it was really going to piss me off if I got out sprinted at the end.
With 4 miles to go, I had done a very strong pull such that I had opened a bit of a gap on the breakaway. I turned a corner and I heard one of the gals from the HerbalLife team yell, "Go Sandy." I assumed that they were trying to tell me something so I put my head down and experienced probably the most pain I have ever felt on the bicycle for the next 4 miles as I did a solo break. I have attached a picture to show you how far I was ahead of the rest of the original break at the finish.
I hit a max heart rate of 195, two clicks higher than my last year's reading of 193! My average HR for the race was 171. In the final sprint, I was running so scared that I hit a speed of 38.6 mph into a 6 mph headwind! I can't look back very well since breaking my neck so I had to assume that my competitors were right on my tail!
I am amazed that both of my quads are incredibly sore, and even my hands hurt - I must have been death gripping the bars! I left the house this morning at 152 pounds, and when I arrived home, I weighed a mere 146. This was after plying my body with lots of food and drink.
The "real feel" temperature at race time (3 PM) was 103 in Ocala. A maximum heart rate of 195 in that heat with that stress probably would qualify as a cardiac event for someone my age! :) The loss of 6 pounds after considerable re fueling is probably the body's reaction to being put under extreme stress. I refuse to lose a competitive event. I made a spectacle of myself in that I started retching before I even crossed the finish line.
Anyway, that was my 8th state championship in 1.5 years!! :)

My Latest 5K
I ran the 23rd Annual Heights 5K Run in Houston on June 7, 2008. It was a hot and very humid day, and you can sure tell by my running photo that I was soaking wet and HOT! I've posted three photos from the 5K.

we need fencing in the Games
It would be nice to include fencing in the games. It's the same exercise as boxing, without the danger. I'd like to fence some old farts for a change.....
Hi Gamers !
I saw a few familiar faces from other groups I am in, and this sounds like an encouraging, informative group!
I used to ride and show horses competitively, mostly game events, barrel racing, pole bending, etc ... I have also done team penning.
I started running a year ago and have run in 3 5k's and a 5 miler since last September. I am registered for several this summer and will be looking for ways to increase my times. Last weekend I ran a fairly flat 5k in 30:32. My goal is to run under 30 on my next race June 14th.
I look forward to hearing your stories !

Welcome Newbies
I would like to welcome all our new members : I know TCO already and Time4Fun is constantly teasing me about a speedo and threatening something with pom poms. I look forward to getting to know more about all of your interests --- WELCOME !!
We're in the mix
So this weekend I rode my bike 35 miles in a fundraiser for the Brain Tumor Society. I find fundraisers like this a great motivation to get up and out on a Sunday morning. I have to ride 50 miles for the Pan Mass Challenge on August 3 so I felt like this ride got me going!
Also, the hubby started practicing the shot put and javelin with the high school kids today during their track and field practice! I bought him a new shot put and javelin and he registered for the Senior Olympics on June 28! Isn't that great! I'm so proud of him, this is gonna be fun!
