POTTERS and MUSES

We are a combination group of veterans and newbies whose primary medium is clay. Many work with other media as well. Let's be an inspiration to each other through topical and free-form discussions. We are inclusive of all other artists and the muses that inspire our work. We welcome all that would like to be, are, or already pros to the forum:) Other mediums are greatly appreciated - join in:)

Welcome all - whether you are new at trying your hand at different types of "ceramics" or an old pro, please consider this your Home :)

There are lots of caring, creative, inventive, diverse artists in the group, so please join us and join in :)

All are invited to also check our Files section for saved tips and videos from our great membership :) We will be working on adding to this section.

Above all, ENJOY !!

CLAY STUDY - Summer 2008
Here is the study I propose:

Find a piece of colorful, boldly patterned fabric (a solid will not do) and cut out a 12" square.

Roll and cut a .25" thick slab about 12.5" by 12.5".

Using applied clay in relief as well carving/denting tools, see if you can recreate the design of the fabric, corner to corner, on your slab. No scanning or photocopying. We can post pictures at the greenware stage.

Then, using slips on greenware and/or glaze on bisque, fire your slab the appropriate number of times to see how close you can come to reproducing the cloth in clay. If you're happy with the end result you can frame both and set them side by side for viewing!

Some of you may be in production for fall/winter shows, so we can let this study ride for the summer with perhaps an October 1st deadline. Post if you're interested in participating.

Thanks. - M

Single firing glazed greenware

Finally managed to upload sample of single-fired glazed greenware. As mentioned in my note yesterday, this technique con contribute very considerably to cutting down firing expense and contamination. Shall write some more about it, probably tomorrow.

Survey Says

In Potters Council there is a survey about the following topic. I think it would be interesting to see what y'all think about it.

How does the current fuel crisis affect your life in clay?

Are you forming, finishing, firing differently?

Island Clay Workshop

Hi all,

I'm back from the workshop and it was great! Met some fantastik folks from all over the country. Great presenters and speakers. I learned so much and wish I had access to kilns for each technique. Adelpi U was the perfect locale, they had 2 salt, 2 saggar and 2 raku kilns plus 2 pits going over the weekend.

They also have a cool anagama kiln there too!

I posted a couple of my pots from the firings, and some pics of pieces by the teachers.

Nothing To Do With Clay

I'm trying to think of the name of a Jell-O product from the late 1970s, early 1980s. It was a whipped concoction, sort of like pudding that had been pumped up with air. When ready to eat, it actually looked a bit like it was made of kitchen sponge material!

It didn't stay on the market very long because it was just too WEIRD! I've searched the Jell-O websites and can't find any mention of it.

Anybody out there with a memory of this goop?? - M

Shimpo Wheel

I am now the proud owner of a Shimpo wheel! I believe it is at least 30-35 years old, but it still runs forward and reverse. It weighs over 100 lbs has an attached metal splash pan and no bat pins. Anyone else used one of these babies?

I posted a pic of it in photos.
