Hot — Untold Story

A new biography looks into the shadows — — 'Untold Story' of Doris Day
• • Born on 3 April 1924, Doris Day — — on screen, she was America's smiling, singing darling. But off screen, her husbands were not Rock Hudson and her life was no light romp.
• • During her years in the spotlight, Doris Day was always portrayed as happily married -- to third husband and manager Martin Melcher -- and loving mother to son Terry. But the real story couldn't be further from the truth, according to David Kaufman's expansive new biography, "Doris Day: The Untold Story of the Girl Next Door." captivated Instead it's a sad story -- partially told in the actress' 1975 autobiography -- of a talented woman who was unloved by her father, pushed by an ambitious stage mother, with four failed -- and mostly loveless -- marriages, who never got what she wanted: simply to have a happy home life.

Rosa Parks — — her belongings to be auctioned
• • Arlan Ettinger took one of civil rights pioneer Rosa Parks' hats to a meeting at the Apollo Theater in New York. "It was a fairly plain-looking black hat. I said it was Rosa Parks'. And their mouths just opened up without saying a word and tears" flowed, Ettinger said. "A very, very powerful moment. You could see the impact this woman has had on everyone."
• • A Wayne County probate court judge in Detroit has asked Ettinger's auction house, Guernsey's, to find a buyer — — preferably a museum, university or other institution — — for thousands of Parks' personal items.
• • Among them are her presidential and congressional medals, a post card from Martin Luther King Jr. and the hat Parks is believed to have been wearing on Dec. 1, 1955, when she refused to give up her bus seat to a white man, cementing her spot in civil rights history. . . .

"The Women Who Raised Me” — — by Victoria Rowell
• • It may have disappointed some fans of “The Young and the Restless” when actress Victoria Rowell’s character fell off a cliff last year — but it left Rowell free to focus on her writing career.
• • “The Women Who Raised Me” recounts Rowell’s experiences in foster care. Growing up as an orphan on a farm in rural Maine might seem an unlikely childhood for a classical ballet dancer and soap opera star, but that was how Rowell got her start. Her foster mother, Agatha Armstead, made a big impression. "She was a real renaissance woman — she could do anything,” said Rowell. “She believed if you had the passion, anything was possible!”

• • On Anne Hathaway Getting Deceived: "Anne is a sweet girl, and he seemed like the right kind of guy," said a friend of Hathaway's. "At the end of the day, could she tell you that he was a dirty dealer? No way. "She's not guilty of anything except being a young woman who hasn't been worked through the wringer by a con artist before."
• • On Anne Hathaway's Perception of Raffaello Follieri: "I think Anne felt she had a major catch who was a powerful, wealthy European businessman," said a former employee of Follieri. "Everything was 'Don't worry, I'm the man.' Essentially, the knight in shining armor. Unfortunately, the armor was some crap metal that tarnishes."
