Queen Wilhelmina Ham-fest
Here I am atop Rich Mt. high above Mena, AR. weathering out the last of Gustov. I came up here Monday parked the camper and got set up, it was a wonderful afternoon, the temps in the middle 80s and overcast. Started raining Tuesday night around 1 am and it’s not expected to slow down until early Friday. The wind has been constant at about 20mph with gusts of about 40mph.
The wife stayed home as she had other engagements and this campsite was reserved last year. It’s a wonderful place for the gathering and is a tradition in the state for the last 40 + years. I have been a regular for the last 4 years and fondly remember my first ones back in the middle and late 70’s. The Ham-fest is always scheduled for the first weekend after Labor Day and Friday is the kick off day….talk about timing.

Yay! Radio is operating
Finally, after having my General for seven years, I have learned how to use my radio and have used it! Never too late and all that, better late than never, whatever.

Zone Permit and Site Plan
I plan on putting a 40 foot tower in the back yard. Our local township requires a zone permit and site plan. Applying for the permit is straight forward. Has anyone ever filed a site plan? I'm sure the local township will explain everything but I'm curious about any of your experiences.

FIELD DAY 2008 @ W6ICR

Imperial County Radio Group conducted Field Day at Imperial County EOC using the call sign of W6ICR, W6(I)mperial (C)ounty (R)aces. We were 2F and made over 400 contacts unofficially as one of our logging computers crashed. We ran two ICOM 746PRO's using a dipole and vertical antenna. We operated on SSB, CW, PSK, RTTY, and FM. We had a blast and some of the guys got some training using the equipment at the EOC. We even had some guys from Mexico come up and help us out! Maybe we made contact with you.

"ham radio is getting up to date" - see video
Update: Have done my seasonal transition from SoCal to NorNev, bringing the radio we removed from my Westfalia with me in a bag. My thinking now is to set up that radio in the house because the motor home is out in storage and I'm in here! I'd like to get a scanner too.
I'll get a handheld which I can use when traveling, and about town etc. And the hand held can serve as well when I'm in SoCal.
arkcro: love hearing about your traveling. I've opted to stay put as much as I can manage this summer because of gas prices.
Here's a YouTube video of a longtime radio friend of Leo's, "The Great Ham Radio Operator, Chet Halberg out of Kansas City."

Field Day
Field Day is the last weekend of June. Today, Imperial Valley hams put on their sunscreen and came to my house to set-up and adjust our Field Day antenna's in temperatures of 104 F. We will be setting up this "tribander" and 40 meter beam in the back country of the Laguna Mountains just east of San Diego for Field Day. The excitement is building. Anyone else out there going to participate in Field Day this year?

I'm back

I wanted to share this video link.
I'm in NV now, my radio from the VW Westfalia is in a bag and sitting in the shed now, will let you know if I get it installed in the motor home. I may opt for a handheld after all - I'm so fussy about the motor home being kept clean and tidy, but we'll see.

Forgive me if it's a repeat.
