Just-in-Case Box

In case of a hurricane(or worse)I'm putting together an emergency food box to last a month. Then, in a year I'll add the items back into inventory. I'm not sure where I'll be able to store it yet. The only place I can think of is the attic. We'll need more than canned goods --- like teabags, spaghetti, dry cat food. Do you think zip-lock bags work for these items? or how about Glad type containers? Any other suggestions? What do you all do? Thanx

How do you make coffee

Do you use whole beans or ground? If beans do you grind them fresh before brewing or ahead of time and store the gind?

Do you use tap water, filtered water or bottled water?

How many scoops of coffee do you use per 6 oz. cup of coffee?

How many cups does your coffee maker make?

How many pots do you make per day? Do you reheat left over coffee? How?

What brand do you usually use? What is your favoite brand?

Lots of coffee questions. But inquiring minds want to know.

Pour yourself a cup and lets talk about coffee...someone add a picture for me here.....:-)

Food History, Folklore, etc.

I love reading cookbooks, you know, like novels etc. I only own 150 now, down from 300 before I moved here 3 years ago, and went through them, either throwing out old ones no longer relaveant, or gave away, etc.
My favorite thing is to read about food history, etc. The Library is good for these type of books, etc.
Since I was born and raised in New England, that was my first reading on the subject.
The pilgrims were devout to the point they would not cook on Sunday as that was the Lords day of rest according to the bible. So they baked beans on Saturday, and made a big enough batch to eat them again on Sunday so as not to have to cook.
They also subsisted on corn meal mush, thanks to the Indians without which they would have starved. I remember reading a diary of one of the first women in the colonies, and one of the entries read " Monday, etc....corn meal mush again! OH dear..."
And now when we are paying top dollar for Organic Polenta and making a big deal about it, I simply have to laugh my head off!
I also loved reading about the women having to cook out on the range while crossing the country on those wagon trains, and how the children had to round up "cow patties" to burn in the campfires to cook their meager rations as there was no firewood on the open lands of the midwest.

These things remind me just how lucky we are. Any one have any other memories you can share with the rest of us?

ADVICE

I have been wanting to add food processer and wondered if you guys knew of a medium to smaller size that I would not have to take a loan on the house to get. Also are the Kitchen-aid stand alone mixers as good as they look? Thanks Cay
