The Tour
Did anyone get a chance to see the first stage of the Tour yesterday? I got to see the last 40 minutes or so.
What an exciting event. I have seen other tours, and races, but this one seems to give much more excitement to the watchers, and certainly to the participants.
That finish was a classic, with a little twist. That bridge in the last seven or eight kilometers, was a nasty one, where the road narrowed down to less than two lanes, then the riders had to go up hill to the finish line.
Then a couple riders broke out too early and couldn't sustain their sprints, while others passed, then this guy from Espania, Valverde, wasn't it, just shot like a rocket past all of them. Wonderful bicycle drama.
Too bad about the injuries, and crashes along the way.
VS is doing a world class job of broadcasting these events.
I am doing my ride early so that I can catch the action this morning again. Ah wonderful, if its July, it must be Tour time.

4th
After driving 100 miles this afternoon to load, when I arrived, they cancelled my load, and I got to drive back empty. At least I have the evening of the 4th off, but I will now get to ride my regular Saturday breakfast ride, if my legs hold up. That'll be much more riding in the last three days than I usally get in a couple of weeks. Riki
Cycling the Grand Canyon
Hey there sports fans,
It's almost vacation time for me and I thought it would be fun to do a bicycle tour of the Grand Canyon. Anyone know if there are such tours at the Canyon? Also, anyone know of any bicycle clubs in that area?
Please tell me all about it!
Ride on,
TL

Saturday/Thursday ride
I had to do my Saturday ride on Thursday this week because it appears that I will be working Friday and Saturday, then starting my regular workweek on Sunday again. I did have Thursday off however, so I decided to make the best of it and head out for a bike ride.Leaving the house at 6:45am, I took a route that was a little different for me, and rode it backwards just to be confusing...as if I really needed that.

I started out heading west from my home near the small Oklahoma community of Johnson, which isn't on very many maps, so I usually just refer to Shawnee. I rode down into the town of Shawnee, and picked up highway 270 and rode west out of town. Just a little past the community of Dale Oklahoma, I found this farmer raking hay and it smelled so good I had to stop and take it in for a while

After I had my fill of hay, I decided I was hungry....see what that hay does for you, it's no wonder cows get fat! I rode into the small town of McLoud, Ok. and stopped at a small cafe in the middle of town and enjoyed a light breakfast. I then left McLoud north on Highway 102 for 4 miles to a paved country road heading east where I met another club member going the opposite direction. Too bad we couldn't have had a little better communication. This gentleman, however, rides in the general direction of 300-400 miles a week, and thinks nothing of 100-125 mile rides in the morning as a warmup...a little out of my class, so it's just as well he was going the other way. The road headed east over hill and dale and I saw very little traffic. The worst traffic on the entire ride was on U.S. 270 going west out of Shawnee.

I then proceeded east until until I came to the main highway leading back south toward Shawnee again and ran across a delightful young lass on an antique 3 speed bike out running her dog. I stopped and chatted for a while and while I was allowed to take her picture, alas, I managed to get my sandwich bag in which I keep my camera in front of the lens, (this is why I prefer single lense reflex cameras) and managed to ruin the photo. Something I will be more careful of in the future, but the plastic bag is a necessity in this climate. Finally turned east again and finished the ride back to the house. A total of 44 miles, and about three hours of pleasant diversion out of my morning. Ride safe, enjoy the day.... Riki

The Outer Banks
Hi, I joined the group recently but, haven't had a chance to post. Usually I bike around the Mid Hudson Valley, but on vacation I went to the Outer Banks. I expected being accustom to the foothills would make the island ride easy. What a surprise when the wind often presents the same challenge as a hill. We went off season, stayed in Avon and took the ferry to Oracoke. Since this island is only reachable by ferry the traffic is reduce and perfect for biking. You do need lots of extra water since there is no place to fill up. Also watch for sudden storms.
I would like to learn more about overnight biking. My pipe dream is to take a vacation by train and rely on my bike for transportation. I think I could do that pretty easily if I went to DC. If that worked I could go lots of places.

Snuck in another one

Keep your mouth shut Riki....that's what I had to keep telling myself this morning! We had a thunderstorm last night that left an inch and one half of welcome rain, the downside was that every bug in the world was out and flying this morning. Every time I would open my mouth to get a gulp of fresh air, I'd manage to breathe in a dozen or so bugs. High humidity was also the donwside of the rain, the air was hazy from the humidity this morning, so distance photos were out of the question. I left the house very early, before sunrise and found several local furry residents out and about along with me. Probably the biggest coon I've ever saw was trotting up the shoulder of the road until he saw me, and a little later I saw a bobcat cross the road about 100 yards in front of me. Neither creature had the politeness to stand still and pose long enough for me to dig my camera out of my jersy pocket and snap their picture however, so I had to settle for the horse. This was really nice getting a second ride in this week, I have to go to work today, but it's a nighttime oil-field load in the Texas panhandle, so I don't have to leave here until around noon. This gives me a total of 79 miles this week....wow, I'm starting to feel like a real bicycle rider this week. The tree is a Rose-a Sharon, I've never seen one bigger than a bush before, it's wild and growing alongside the road, and from the look of the poisin ivy growing up it's trunk, it's lucky to be strong enough to bloom. Poisin Ivy is a parasite that will eventually kill a tree if left long enough.

I took my regular 27 mile route this morning, but had several pleasant surprises as noted. Goes to show you, even the same route can be a pleasant diversion on a new day. Ride safe, ride often, and enjoy the day...... Riki
You know it's time to post something...
...when the manager of your group sends you a PM, wondering if you're OK.
As I told Cacci, I'm alive and well.
I haven't been posting, but at least I've been out on my bike - with my bike group on Monday and usually one or two other outings beyond that. I've found, too, that I'm biking to run short errands, library, etc.
I've posted a couple of the last pictures taken of my Monday group.
The first picture was taken at a rest stop. Decided to just sneak a picture with no warning just to do something different. (Didn't fool Lou and Dwayne as they were keeping an eye on what I was doing.)
The second picture is a dicey little downhill stretch at the east end of the Chatfield Reservoir dam. Only one person in the group went down the slope on his bike. The whole path was composed of small, ΒΌ" crushed granite. Very slippery. I found that I had to apply both hand brakes in order to keep the bike from dragging me down the hill.

Hello Everyone
Hi, just joined. Looking forward to getting know some fellow cycling enthusiasts. I try to ride 10-15 miles every morning, living on the Suncoast of Florida that is pretty easy for me to do unless the thunderstorms start early.
saw a new article in my head
I went out today riding up a narrow secondary road outside portlamd, maine (secondary road = cratered as in WW2. when a car passed me with a sign saying "oversized vehicle" on its roof As i quickly check my mirror i see this truck hauling a home I pull into a driveway as it passes me laughing i saw the front page of our local paper which is always looking for news it read in my minds eye " disabled cyclist run over by double wide."
