The Drifter

'Jack Daniels', the bartender heard from behind him. He toweled off his hands, blindly reached for the bottle and poured the bourbon into a short glass. Without making eye contact, they exchanged money for alcohol. The lights were low and stale cigarette smoke lay thick in the room. The music from an old juke box ... the clinking of empty beer bottles ... and arguing across a nearby pool table blended into a loud noise that failed to mask the despair in such places.

The unshaven, unkept drifter sipped the whiskey with his hat pulled down, hiding his face. He never glanced up, even when a man barged through the door yelling for everyone to get down on the floor. 'Empty your pockets!', he shouted.

The bartender reached for a gun under the counter just as the intruder jumped behind the bar to empty the cash drawer.

A shot rang out.

'You think I'm jokin' hear?' he screamed at the crowd. The bartender lay dead at his feet. The murderer laughed as he took a swig from a bottle of gin. 'Who's gonna be the next dead hero?' he mocked loudly. The juke box finally joined the rest of the bar in stunned silence. The drifter didn't move from his barstool, nor did he look up.

Suddenly a gun was pointed into his face, between his eyes. 'I said, get on the floor old man'. Slowly the drifter looked up at his assailant and whispered, 'you're makin' a mistake'.

Enraged, the gunman again ordered him to empty his pockets. He shoved the barrel of the pistol hard into the drifter's forehead.

The old man grabbed his arm, slammed his wrist against the edge of the bar causing the gun to drop to the floor. With his other hand, he grabbed the robber by the back of the neck and placed the barrel of his own weapon into thug's mouth, cocking the trigger. 'I tried to warn you', he said calmly.

'The bullet in this gun wasn't meant for you tonight', he whispered, 'but looks like you get it'. The robber's gagged as he choked on the steel pushing against his throat.

Just then the police arrived with weapons drawn. They had gotten the report of 'shots fired' in the vicinity of the tavern. The drifter released the murderer into their custody and laid his gun on the bar. After the investigation and the report was filed, the old man was free to go. Silently he walked between the onlookers toward the door and stepped out into the dark street. He had never tried to retrieved his pistol.

Later, as the coroner loaded the bartender's body onto a gurney, the crew proceeded to clean up the crime scene.

On the floor between the barstool and the bar, written in shaky pen strokes, they found the suicide note.
