- To keep your brain healthy, keep your body healthy. That means exercising, eating right, quitting smoking and following your doctor's advice.
- Socialize and have fun. Dementia seems to be tied to social isolation. Make time for friends and family, and seek out people who challenge and interest you, not ones that always tell the same old stories.
- Do things that stimulate your mind - playing games, reading, writing.
- Learn something - a new language, a new exercise routine, a musical instrument, or go all the way and start a new college degree.
- Develop your spiritual life. If being active in a house of worship doesn't seem right for you, try praying or meditating for a few minutes every day.
- Travel, especially to new places.
- Have regular sit-down meals with family and friends.
- Learn to manage stress so it doesn't overwhelm you. This may involve a combination of things: therapy, medication, exercise, sunlight, social time.
- Work on developing and maintaining a positive attitude toward your age and your remaining years.
- Volunteer for a cause or community that means something to you.
