The Otherday I had the news on and what did I behold? Needville Texas and their battle to make some 5 year old Native Kid cut his hair.
These kind of stories never cease to amaze me. I always put them in the folder in my outlook express labeled: "Why I Homeschool My Kids."
Every year I see these stories in the news. Children and their families complaining that local students and administrative staff singling them out due to race, color, religion or creed.
I have seen stories where Jewish kids were told they could not wear the Star of David because its a gang symbol, Pagan kids told the same about the Pentagram. I have seen Christian kids told they could not display the cross {not as many of those stories but they are still there}. I have even seen other stories like this one, over the years where Native boys were told they must cut their hair to attend school.
If there was any doubt in my mind that our public schools are directly responsible for the lack of understanding about the basic rights conferred upon the average citizen via the Constitution of the United States, all I have to do is read the Flavor of the Month Stories in this catagory of religious bigotry, and/or anti-religious sentiment.
As a Vet this sort of stuff pisses me off something terrible. How can anyone learn anything, when all they can focus on is the bitterness that blooms in a person's heart when they realize everyone has basic rights except the person in question, and that derth of rights rests exclusively on their religious affiliation, creed and/or race.
The best part about this story in particular, as I watched CNN interview the locals: When some woman starts saying something along the following lines:
"I know that some people will see this story and think we are backwards. I know that some people will see this story and think we are hicks. But I dont see it that way. That little boy needs to cut his hair and follow the rules. That's how it is around here."
{keep in mind this is as I recall, and not a direct quote}
My thoughts for the rest of the night, here in Oklahoma with my chickens and turkeys:
"Of course not lady. I would never picture you and all your neighbors wearing wife beater tees, and beer helmets while hootin and hollaring at a Nascar event, covered with tattoos while walking your pet racoons cause you done ate all your possums in the last bunch of vittles. I wouldnt dare picture you all skinny dipping in the Ceee-Ment pond with Ellie Mae and her pet chimps. In fact, Your demeanor caused me to picture--not Granny and her Spring Tonic, but Trump Towers, pate`, and weird performance art in New York City...."
NEWE YOOOORK CITY?
Get a Rope!
No I would never picture a bunch of hateful white people in Texas as backwards hicks while they ridicule and target a Native American kid who is a whole Whopping Five Years Old, for following in the cultural and spiritual footsteps of his nation. One of the Five Hundred Nations that other hateful white people tried to snuff out. It would never occur to me, that we would feel the need to force assimilation on a child in this late day and age, as we watch a historical presidential campaign that contained both a Black Man and a Woman as potential presidents.
We Done Grad-ee-ated to the Modern Age. We gots indoor plumbing now and we dont gots to eat no more possums in our vittles with the grocery store.
But we still persecute people who are different. Especially Children. And we do it in institutions that accept federal funding, who pay lip service to the ideal of diversity while taking the hard earned tax dollars of not only those White People, but everyone else too in order to implement their policies. It doesnt take a lot of ciphering and Not-ting to figure that out Mrs Jethro Bodine.
The end result will be one of two things:
The family will successfully sue the school district in Needville for religious and racial discrimination using federal money. Since it looks like a small town, in these hard times, I doubt the town or the district can afford it, though the members of that school district sure act like it. After the family wins, the family will probably have to move away for safety's sake. Because Righteously Indignant people have difficulties accepting their position as being in the wrong, some will feel this is permission to harass this family and their kids. The adults in that family may find themselves unhire-able, or unable to keep a lease, get their mail on time, find a doctor--you name it. I have seen this before in other cases.
Or the School distict will see the legal writing on the law and reluctantly allow Free Expression of this five year old. Meanwhile blaming his test case for every other discipline problem that ever occurs after the fact. He will face harassment by kids, some of it egged on by their parents for being Native, for daring to not conform with WASP standards. Being Bullied or becoming a Bully are his choices. He will find that if he defends himself from being picked on in or after school, he will get in trouble, but that if he doesnt, the feeding frenzy will begin--kids can be so cruel, especially when the adults they look to for guidance practically give them permission to single someone out for "Special Treatment."
Either way its going to suck for that little boy and his family. We will applaud them from a distance for standing up for their rights, but precious little help will arive after the initial hoop-la. They still live there, and the rest of us live wherever we live. Letters of support a nice, but they dont keep the bullies off, pay legal fees or tuition to private schools, or get daddy or mommy hired, etc., And the American Public has the collective attention span of a gnat, so the first time some starlet forgets to wear panties on Rodeo Drive we will forget this and other important issues, because, "Hey isnt that so and so's Brazillian?"
Meanwhile that little boy and his familiy will be learning harsh lessons about our National Character. In that its not all-- people sometimes make it out to be.
That we say this is a melting pot, but we only like you if you melt beyond recognition, that you become the American Equivalent of the ubiquitous Mr and Mrs Smith. Personally, I prefer a stew. I like to know thats carrots I am eating. I like it that I know its a potato. I like America the way I like my stew.
Hearty, Meaty, with big chunks of recognizable vegies and meats. Because the alternative sounds more like something that's been run through a juicer. Though still nutritious it's not nearly as satisfying or delicious as a stew. And Juiced vegies are Kind of gross looking.
But then I guess no one really thinks of it that way. So I ask you; Do you want people or pulp?
One has a spine and the other is just ground up beyond all recognition.
Which do you prefer?
The results of this test will become apparent after the next great depression. People with spines will protect this country and our civil rights.
Pulp will simply take the shape of its container and degrade.
So hurry up and make up our minds already.

I say the parents who are Native people should sue the entire state of Texas and until they get an apology they should take it to the United States Supreme Court, and if there is any retaliation then that should go to the court also. But of course we are talking about the only people that the United States has kept captive for the last thousand years, and the only poverty stricken people in this country with absolutely no recourse to make their life better. Of course what do you expect from people who do not allow prayer in school, the singing of the National Anthem, and who voted to remove "in God we trust" from the money we so boldly spend in tax dollars that we then spend on harassing a poor little 5 yr old Native boy????

One more thing, in traditional Native culture a man is only required to cut his hair for two things??? 1) he must cut his braid off and present it to his wife if he is caught cheating on her, after she has thrown his ass to the curb, which she is entitled to do. and 2) he is required to cut his braid off and place it in the casket of his mother when she passes on. So if neither of these apply I see no reason for him to cut his hair.
But of course who is going to sire the cause for the boy and his family???? And I am just blowing hot air because no one listens to any Native Americans anyway.

No always but often.
There are some people who think that freedom of religious expression or freedom of expression in general is a basically Permission to impose their ideological beliefs on others--especially on others who do not belong to the dominant culture--here its WASP.
For those who dont know what WASP means that's White Anglo Saxon Protestant. And Indian practicing his Native Faith is probably not going to considered WASP-ish enough, if even WASP-ish at all.
The problem with allowing Prayer in School is that then you have to decide whose Prayers? Do we rotate those prayers? Mormons Today, Jews Tomorrow, then you have all the Christian Denominations, but what if you have a Pagan who wants to pray?
It goes against the 1st Commandment to put any God before Yahweh, so you know the Christians, Jews and Muslims will have a cow if a Pagan or Animist prays. But in order to be fair you HAVE to allow it, thats the rule.
Then you got a big hairy fight on your hands. And most Pagans dont want to pray to Yahweh--for a variety of reasons. Most-not all. So they aint going to be happy.
Will you be okay doing a Muslim Prayer? They do it 5 times a day on their day and kneel and bow on the floor facing the East. Buddhists do a lot of prostrations too but they dont worship a God, they have a lot of saints, but their theology is really different. Then you always have at least one angry Teenage Satanist in the school. That Artsy Fartsy Kid that wears black nail polish and sneers at everyone, He just Cant Wait til its his turn to shock everyone, while telling them that they have to pray to the dark lord. He doesnt really believe in Satan, but he is going to have his turn damnit, and you better participate or he will just know you are a poser and never freaken stop whining about it.
We have had a lot of AfroCarribean kids immigrate here--so we might even get to see someone pray to Oya or Papa Legba or Oshun.
--get my point? Its better to keep religion private and in church, otherwise everybody will want their turn on principle's sake or for shock factor--just because they can, you know how kids are. Its the same thing with teaching Creation.
Whose Creation Myth are we sticking too again? I always thought Adhumbla the Cow licked the Giant Yimir out of a giant block of Cosmic Ice, then his toes mated with each other and created mountains, etc.,
I cant wait til we teach that Creation Myth, it will help explain a lot about how the universe came to be right? It will really help your kids learn about how the Gods were involved with their creation, and that will let them know that there are many deities, and that they never have to be alone again in the world, that everything happens for a reason.
Sounds great dont it?
You see when you use faith as the main reason to behave: Look Busy, Thor is Coming.... Pretend to be Nice, Jesus is Watching, Be Charitable or Mohammed will get you. Then you are not instilling an internal moral compass in the child. YOu are saying we must threaten you in order for you to act properly.
And how is that working out? We have lots of kids great at making threats. But not many who are good at just being good. You have to start early with teaching character, and its important that you instill in them a humanitarian streak.
You are good because it builds community. You are good and help others because it makes your world a better place. You are good because you want someone else to consider being good to you, teamwork, kindness, compassion, combined with a healthy sense of self and boundaries.
If you force your religion on another kid because you think that they will have no morals, then you are violating their personal boundaries and you are teaching them that personhood is dictated by the church they go to, and NOT simply based on the fact that they ARE innately a person.

Very well stated, OP. But, then again, I find your opinion pieces are always well argued. I hope some day that you consider running for public office. You possess the kind of sensibilities your community...heck...this whole country could really benefit from.

Thanks but no thanks. I saw what people did to Jesus, and I aint nearly as nice or as pure as he is.

Discrimination against a child because of his and his parents' religious beliefs or cultural customs that cause harm to no one is unconstitutional and inappropriate.
It's interesting that my church is more accepting of a variety of beliefs and customs than that public school is. view link
We must keep pushing back against the pulp, unrelentingly, every day, wherever encountered.

Yep its okay to use them thar Injuns for Mascots like a dog or a wild cat or some other animal, makes us feel all powerful and stuff, having vanquished such noble savages.
But the minute they remind us that they are still here, still kicking, still being who they are, well, we have to shave their heads and rub their nose in the fact that they are the last of their kind and we are the author's of their destruction.
Oh Well, At least you are honest. So we can give you brownie points for sinning boldly as Martin Luther often advised.
That you feel the desire to exercise this sort of power of such a young person over something like the length of his hair tells me exactly what kind of person you are, and how you abuse power when you have it.
I am so glad that I was brought up in a family who knew intimately that the Native Peoples are alive and mostly well, and some have managed to keep their ways intact.
Its a shame that some people missed out in that respect.

Nobody has any business trying to prevent expression of one's own religion in public, just as long as they don't try to compel others to participate. It isn't forbidden to pray in school, just as long as it isn't done out loud or in any way forcing anyone else to pray along, too. For those of the Christian persuasion, they should remember that Jesus advocated for private, secret prayer, not making a big production of it. Secret prayer is allowed, because it is undetectable.
People would be a lot better off if they could learn to relax when confronted with personal differences of any kind. Difference is not necessarily a threat.

When I signed my contract I voluntarily allowed some of my civil rights to be curtailed while serving this nation, perhaps you will recall that line out of the sacred oath, "To protect the Constitution from All Enemies, Foreign AND DOMESTIC."
Enemies of the Constitution aren't just crazed terrorists crashing planes. Those enemies are anyone in this country who seeks to limit, curtail or prohibit free expression under the law as it exists currently. Any attempt to amend the Constitution legislatively without {as in skipping} the official amendment process. It takes a lot to amend the Constitution, as you will recall with the allowance of African Americans to Vote, and to end Jim Crowe laws as well as Segregation. So close to this subject, especially with the recent passing of Jesse Helms and before him, Strom Thurmond, two living, active politicians only recently retired who opposed many aspects of Civil Rights, one of them involving African American citizens.
What does that have to do with this case? I guess that in the absence of my civil rights as you might recognize them, that my appreciation grew for them. That while doing without, while functioning without, in that period of self induced silence on that front, I discovered so much that I had to say on the issue, and so much that needed to be said.
So what I dont understand, and I realize that this is touchy subject, but your membership in African Americans over 50 group--leads me to believe that you are African American. So I dont get, how that would preclude the necessity to stand up for civil rights all around. That you would wish for your fellow citizens at least what you would wish for yourself?
I realize how close that comes to a Q'oranic passage, the Muslim version of the Golden Rule. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
If you had a son or grandson, and the public schools were specifically targeting him for forced assimilation, to deny his heritage as an African American, how would that make you feel?
Because I dont just speak up about Native Issues. I speak up about American Issues, and if we allow Native Americans or any minority group to be singled out thusly, then we allow local and state and federal governments the ability to create dangerous legal precedents, in which as time goes by, all of our rights shall be eroded, and social conformity will become a legal issue and not just a social one.
If we single kids like that out for things that are clearly not illegal or dangerous or disruptive, then we also give permission to his or her peers to enforce conformity through bullying and peer pressure.
Perhaps I missed something, but peer pressue is bad across the board because it inhibits individual-critical thinking skills and replaces it with mob rule. These are not values I would want instilled into our next generation. One has only to look at Germany in WWII to see how that will turn out. Violence is inevitably used to enforce community values, but not the important onces, but simply the stuff on the surface.
Thats where we get things like Gay Bashing, African Americans being dragged to death behind buses, lynchings, Gang rapes, etc., because in that world it becomes permissible to use any means deemed necessary--to enforce unofficial- unwritten- social rules.
His long hair is a matter of cultural heritage and by extension of that, creed, and religion. Forcing him to cut his hair in order to be allowed to attend a public school that operates using federal funding is a violation of that child's civil rights.
Its that simple.
The other side of this coin is this: Where do these people get off thinking that they are entitled to regulate something so personal as hair cuts especially when its known that the hair issue is a religious and cultural one.
This is public school, not boot camp. Children do not give up their five freedoms to attend, unless the burden of proof is provided by the school showing that the method of expression in question is undeniably a disruption to the learning environment.
If he cant wear his hair long, then best get rid of all religious medals, tees or other jewelry that depict spiritual or religious themes, etc., No observations of holidays of any kind because they all have religious roots or counterparts, and some are racially motivated. By celebrating one race by denying him the right to celebrate his, is unfair by our own standards.
By celebrating or tolerating one religion while banning his, that too is unfair by our own standards.

And at every function the TIA holds, we have always had Atheists and Agnostics as guest speakers and participants {hence Reflection} because we agree that while everyone may not believe in a higher power, most people who lead a spiritual life and/or an examined life do practice some form of meditation or reflection.
There is room for everyone.
What I have a problem with are people who take a Supremacist tact in their religious life {or Atheist life} wherein, its there way, or they catagorize you as a nonperson, demonic, or superstitious boob.
Not only is that just not nice, its not true or equitable, because you write a person off before you even get to know them.
There are many things about me that would shock you Mel. Things that would blow your awesome, octogenerian mind.
:)
The reason that I enjoy talking to you so much, is that your views are so different from mine. Instead of being threatened by that, I feel that its an opportunity for us to enrich each other with our observations. That mutual benefit can take place.
This paraphrasing, A Medieval Persian Mystic Jalal al-Din Muhammad aka Rummi:
"Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing,
there is a field. I will meet you there.
When the soul lies down in that grass,
the world is too full to talk about
language, ideas, even the phrase each other
doesn't make any sense. "
This is one other way of expressing the idea of the Golden Rule. As the Buddhists say, that Separation is an illusion. Even if its not, how different the world would be if we were to pretend otherwise. To live in a place that is based on Agape.
But that demands a cognitive leap,
And most of all, in this and other discussions involving society and environmental issues:
"The significant problems of our time cannot be solved by the same level of thinking that created them." -- Albert Einstein
