The Fourth of July: The day we celebrate our country's independence. As tradition would have it, our family gathers around the barbecue for grilled meats and veggies. As our flag flies on a pole in our front yard, we prepare the backyard for the feast. Table under the gazebo, chairs scattered about, a hammock in the shade under a tree, and a tiny pool for the little ones. So begins the day.

My brother and wife are the first to arrive, and thankfully, with no DVD in hand. Last year they insisted we watch a 'wonderful' movie, and I missed the fireworks. Of course, in my opinion, the movie was not so wonderful. In fact it was boring! This year they have decided to return home early, and I get to see the sky light up in beautiful colors.

The day progresses with good family and friends, good food, good conversation, and most importantly, good weather. A perfect day.

As evening turns to night, David and I walk the five blocks to the beach. We set our chairs in a 'good spot', chat with neighbors and friends also gathered for the events of the evening, settle into the chairs and wait. There are boats of all types along the river and bay. Everyone waits with anticipation.

Our wait is short. Before long the sky lights up with the sounds and colors of the rockets shot into the night sky. The show begins.

At some point I think of our national anthem and the words: "And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air". I feel the pride of being an American. I whisper a prayer for our soldiers around the globe, and I thank God for the perfect ending to a perfect day.
