When my son was very young, my husband started
to talk about the trip they would take together
after he graduated from college.
They would buy motorcycles, and ride from Michigan to the Pacific Ocean taking back roads, and see all the sights along the way. The Black Hills, Yellowstone, Las Vegas (my son's addition), Grand Canyon, even the Route 66 crazy motels. See the seals in Oregon, eat barbque and listen to blues in Memphis, ride across the Golden Gate Bridge, and through the giant redwoods.
Fate intervened, and first, the cancer diagnosis and debilitating treatment. Then, the serious accident that took 5 surgeries and a year in a wheelchair for my husband to recover from. He was embarassed at first by the necessary alteration to his bike.
I told him that someone who really loves to ride, will find a way to continue no matter what. That is courage and determination to me, not a cop out. He worked out at physical therapy 3 times a week, never missing a day since he got the ok to start from the ortho last November, to rebuild the muscles in his arms and legs, just to be able to make this ride.
We watched with pride as our son graduated 2 weeks ago.
This morning, I stood in the road and watched them drive away.
Sometimes, if you really believe in a dream, it comes true.

How wonderful that they are able to continue the dream on schedule, despite the tremendous hurdles along the way. I hope you have a good support system for the time they are gone. 'Cause I'd be a nervous wreck!
