George Jones, I Don't Need Your Rockin' Chair



Something happened to my children the day I turned 60. I was suddenly old to them, when just months before we had heated conversations on things like politics, religion and who was the all time greatest guitar player. Suddenly I know nothing about music. They were interested in what I had to say. Suddenly, I turned into this little old lady to them that had to be watched over like a child. On my profile page I have this graphic of a lady golfer, since golfing had been a big part of my life. My one son said, "Mom, do you know what that means?" Like, duh, of course I understand. They are irritated most of the time when I talk about eons, because they can't understand that older people do not cease to be social beings. They think everyone I meet is an axe murderer waiting to strike at any time. I did not raise my sons this way. Argggggg They have come to accept I make a trek to St Louis, every year now, and say nothing. I think, they think, I am supposed to sit here in this recliner, watch soap operas and go to church on Sunday.

I just want to raise the awareness level of the boomer generation. I don't even treat my 82 year old mother like this. I push her all the time to get out. Got her to a party just last Friday night and I have to admit we were the belles of the ball.

So, now I am 61 and it gets worse. I have to have them find the appropriate ring tone for my phone, since I would probably choose something like "the Milk Shake song" or God forbid "The Hump song". They used to love it that I dressed "cool". Last year I was weaing the tight hip huggers, that showed off my one remainiing assest. This year, I get jeans with an elastic waist band. Hmmmmmmmm Oh and forget those totally cool Rock Tees I wore.

Well, mama has had a rough year, but she is back and with a vengance. I like the cool clothes, I can still think about romance and certainly do, thanks to eons. Hey and I am a cougar at that.


Can you see and hear them now, if I had this as a bumper sticker!!!

Oh and I even like some rap music. I may not be able to do the new dances, but mama still knows how to shake her "money maker". Not sure, that I am even supposed to know what that means.

Yeah I know what you mean. When the grandkids were little I was like Superman with a car and money. When they (especially the girls) got into their teens suddenly it was why are you listening to the same radio station I am? Aren't you old? My one granddaughter said "I'm always explaining you to my friends. You're different than their grandpas." They thought is was weird when I took up sending txt msgs and even got their moms to do it. But they still came to me to get songs for their cell phone.
As they aged however it's more of an acceptance with the oldest telling me "Don't ever change Pap, we love you the way you are." HaHaHa. Victory is mine!
You're pretty cool too Diana and I'm looking forward to seeing the same funny nice person again that I met last year at St Louis, even if we are a year older! ^_^

I know that I was the coolest mom on the block...raised five..I have buried one recently and raised HIS son to age nineteen, and he still lives with me and speaks to me in monotones and looks leery when I mention romance. Of course, romance, love, music ( unless its Swing Low Sweet Chariot) belongs to them. When I sing or hum a tune by Beyonce,Kanye West, Jay-Z, or Common..they look embarrased.
Like you, I am going BACK to my funky tees and cute stuff.
I forgot who I was for a while. Thanks for helping me to remember!

Age is a state of mind. I worked with guys in the service that became "old" men the day they turned 21. They were ready to sit in a rocker, blanket over the legs, and stare into a void. You stay young by doing things that interest you. Just don't keep the list of interest a short one. Expand your interest and your mind keeps working. One day a light will go off in those tiny compartment brains and realize that they are lucky to have an active mother. Maybe, they will have a thought hoping they can be as active as you are when they get to their sixties. Here is to many many more years of confounding them.
