Well, we at Eons seem to have been having a few of those lately…And we know you’ve noticed too.
Recently, we made some enhancements and changes with sharing photos on Eons. It started off great! A few little changes here, a few there…then it snowballed. In short, we are currently missing the mark on our goal of improving your photo sharing experience on Eons, and for that we apologize.
In an effort to improve our photo capabilities, we introduced a lot of changes that in some cases were confusing or simply not easy to use. Please allow me to briefly explain what our plans were, and how we arrived at what we have today. As valued members of our community, I feel I owe you some insight.
How We Got Here
On Eons, there are several areas on the site where members upload or share photos. Most notably, photos are uploaded and shared by members on Profiles, in Groups, Blogs and LifePaths.
In the past, we saved photos solely in that one place where you posted it (your Group, Blog or Profile). This wasn’t so great because if you wanted to post the same photo in multiple places, you had to upload it over and over again in each separate place. Our solution to this was to create a Photo Center, which is accessible from your Profile that would allow you to more readily access and manage all your photos, as well as let you upload a photo once and then share it anywhere on Eons you choose.
Further, we planned to roll out the changes in a series of quick upgrades to the site, starting with updates to your Profile photos, followed by Group photos and then Blog photos.* The operative word in our planning efforts was “quick.” (Ahem, didn’t quite work out that way…)
To elaborate, we went into this not fully appreciating how complicated the photo systems changes would prove to be. Then we had a classic problem on our hands. The longer we took to deliver the new features, the more torn we became on whether to offer some of the new features (e.g., uploading multiple photos and the ability to create albums) or to hold off on delivering the new features until all the new features were completely ready. (That would be where the snowball effect comes in.) Well, we decided to not wait and to give Eons members some cool new features along the way. As a result, many of you are now experiencing challenges because our photo offering is out there for you to use, yet it’s not complete. Please know we are committed to getting the photo features in place that you want and need, so here is what we plan to do.
Making it Right As Soon As We Can
As of Tuesday (7/1), you will have control over what photos you want displayed on your Profile. You can do this by marking certain photos as ‘favorite photos.’ Also, please note that when other members or visitors visit your Photo Center, they will be directed to a view of your favorite photos.
Although not for release tomorrow, we are also working on enhancing the controls that you will have with regard to other members or visitors viewing all your photos, which is currently an option from your Photo Center. Please note that we have privacy controls in place today, but want to offer you even greater control over who sees what when it comes to your photos. On a related note, we are working on ways to make uploading and sharing photos easier within your Groups and Blogs. By the end of July, I am confident that we will have an easy-to-use set of photo features that will make you proud to share your photos on Eons.
Each day, we receive invaluable input from you, and in large part, you very much influence and frequently co-author what we are trying to build here at Eons. That’s a good thing and we look forward to more feedback. In the meantime, thank you for your patience.
Lee Goss
President, Eons, Inc.
* Please note that LifePath requires substantial work to improve the overall capabilities of that tool, so we plan to address the changes to the photos within LifePath later this year.
Ever have one of those days?

Lee, I know you have good people who have been working very hard on this. Thank you for the update. Since we members seem to be so good at using features in unanticipated ways, perhaps the closed beta site could be brought back some day, so that those who are interested can test the new stuff.

Thank you for the explanation. I had no idea it was such a complicated issue. I thought I was just doing something wrong on my profile and got terribly frustrated. I'm sure the mountain of emails you received regarding this did not help either, my apologies for my contributions. A little information goes a long way.

I hope it does not get too complicated. When it is near finished can you post the instructions on how to use it?

We are the very active generation of change. I am quite sure we can handle the inconvenience until all the changes have been done. Thanks for the improvements!

I so appreciate the explanation. I am sure the changes are not the easiest things to do and especially not if they are to be user friendly.

I`m sorta like annboo(#5), please have instructions available. Some of us aren`t quite as computor smart as others! Was easy the old way, but, maybe, hopefully this way will be also. Thanks,

I appreicate the explanation, however, the one feature I miss is being able to delete a photo I posted by mistake.

OK...WHAT THE F*** just happened!!! All my photos are gone...they have been placed into an album which is not viewable. There are no stars available to select "favorites." Is this part of what is still in progress? Because I was OK with things until I came in and saw everything I had downloaded is GONE and I like to share with my eons buds! Thank you!

Thanks so much. I'm fairly new to eons and so far haven't had any prolems except with the LifePath. As far as I'm concerned, eons is the best community I've found yet.

I finally got some photos scanned, but had to upload them using Photobucket. Kept getting error messages when I tried to upload them directly. Hopefully this will be fixed soon.

One advantage of being up at 2 AM after completing a piece of art for a client, is that it's quiet and I have no distractions. So having an interest in the "photos fiasco" and after reading your blog, I decided to thoroughly investigate my profile photos, my photos now placed in albums that are group related, and since I manage only two groups now which absolutely depend upon the posting of either "works in progress" or "finished pieces", I decided to also scrutinize these areas of my eons activity.
When I started the Eons Art Gallery, a group where Eons artists could post works for sale for the general Eons membership, the 318 contributing artists asked me to ask Eons to include a "search photo by member" function, the idea being that an interested buyer could view all that artist's works simply by searching their screen name. Eons was in it's technological infancy at that time, so Communitygal and I decided it would be easier for me to set up a series of web pages, which I not only designed but hosted on my own server. Visitors and prospective buyers could access this mini site simply by clicking a "view link" in the general comment section. Each artist's profile photo was hot linked to their own Eons profile page and the artist was directed to post all their "finished pieces" in their group photos as a portfolio. It worked like a charm, believe me. The Christmas Extravaganza that I spent almost a month organizing , editing and posting for all to see, was a severe disappointment due specifically to Eons "dropping the advertising ball". As a result, I not only took this mini site off my server, but I also recently closed the group. There is another Eons Art for sale group which still functions, managed and moderated by others, I'm told, and I imagine it works similarly.
Later, I decided to open another gallery of sorts, the Eons Artists Gallery, where group member artists could post their works for display purposes only. Again, we asked for the "search photo by member" function, and during this "photo fiasco" it actually appeared and was perfectly designed for our needs. Using it, I also spent numerous hours setting up individual albums for each contributing artist, dropping and dragging images until my fingers hurt. But it's in place and now members can add images to their own albums as well as posting on the group photo area. A redundancy yes, but extremely functional for visitors to view any group member's portfolios without going to their profile page.
At the same time, I opened the Eons Art School. Now, this is where that "search photo by member" function was imperative for me to manage the group because group members post "works in progress", other members comment on and to instruct if need be, and when the piece of art is "finished" I create a PDF and msword file detailing the entire process, and arrange the actual file in chronological order... the first WIP (work in progress) and the comments, the second WIP, etc... eventually leading to a complete lesson for all members (and future ones as well), to learn from and to share. And for a brief shining moment, "search photo by member" function was in place and I was a happy camper so to speak.
It's gone now, vanished overnight.
Lee, "you got some essppllaaiiinniinngg to do" (to quote Desi Arnez).
Seriously, this was the only improvement to the entire photo process my group members needed and wanted. Will it return?

All well and good, but Eons still doesn't allow me to upload photos from my computer. Any idea why and when that could change?
Thanks.

I cannot seem to add my photos back to my profile page - which people would leave things alone when they are not broken - things worked perfectly prior to this.

Thank you for the explanation, but it is much more complex now than before - for art groups and photo groups, it is a bear (think in the woods). Also, it is NOT intuitive to do on your profile and I used to be an IT manager, and geez - the easier and more user friendly the better - your goals for photos are not understandable.

No one has answered this question: Why does eons ask for member's EMAIL PASSWORD (Gmail, MSN, Yahoo, etc.) every time they upload photos? No one has ever asked me for my email password, and would never give it to anyone, even a family member. So, why do you guys ask for it?
- 26. 3 months ago flowingwells wrote:

I agree completely with tulipsNchimneys: why is my email password part of the photo process? The screen says "so we can share your photos with your family & friends". Right-o! I don't buy that for a second. FYI, I NEVER put in my password. I just click "profile" to get rid of the screen asking for my password, no email password is entered, my photos remain loaded on the site (or they used to, anyway) and I'm good to go.
I haven't tried uploading any new photos for the past few days. I got so frustrated over the favorites thing, not knowing how to designate a photo a favorite, or how to removed one as a favorite -- I finally stopped using the photo feature completely.

Bravo Mr.Eons!

Obviously Lee is aware that these changes cause problems, why else would he issue a formal apology and promise to fix it? (I appreciate his taking the time to explain it all, however.) And eons wants and appreciates its members "valuable input", positive and negative.
Just because eons is free doesn't mean its members don't have a right to voice their opinion, or must feel compelled to agree with everything they see here. So... I guess you will be one of those people willing to lay down and give them your email password hmm? Keep in mind, you have the right to forfeit your own privacy, but what about all of the people whom you email? I doubt that they would want their privacy compromised, which is exactly what you would be doing when you give eons your password.
