I heard much on the news, the blogs, the posts, etc. about the Supremes decison today declaring it unconsitutional to apply the death penatly to child rape. While I've said it wouldn't matter if it were my child, or grandchild (I'll probably commit murder, and beg for mercy, not a right thing, but an emotional thing). I do not beleive in state sanctioned murder. Too many innocent people have been imprisoned. I do believe that any sexual crime should carry severe punishment, and often with no option of ever being released.
I remember when my daughter was about 12 or so, this young man came to our church. He was the son of a prominent engineer in our town. He'd been drunk, very young, some kid hit his car with a snow ball. He turned the car around, and shot the kid.
He found Jesus! His speech was marvelous, and I think sincere. My daughter was in tears when she left church. She asked, "Mom, he's changed, he's found God. What don't they let him go?"
I said, "Well, honey, God forgives, but He does not change our past. He has to pay for what he did. Besides, if that got you out of jail, everybody would find Jesus."
There is forgiveness, but not forgetfullnes, except by God. We need to focus on keeping children safe, keep them in jail, but let us not murder.

The death penalty has been in existence since forever, but the killing continues. Virginia has had 100 executions since the death pealty was reinstated about ten years ago. Thats about 10 per year. I don't think its working as a deterriant, because folks are still killing inthe state. The same holdsfor Texas, the hang em state. I think that life in prison is a better punishment for these offenders. I don't think that people that commit these crimes worry about death. What's the point in the death penalty.

We've had so many cases, particulary here in NC that people on death row have been exonerated by DNA, usually poor, and or black people that could afford a high-priced lawyer. It's just not right! I'm a bleeding heart liberal, but think often that I have much more compasssion than those on the so-called "right"? Very confusing.
