The world is a darker place today. I got to see George Carlin twice during his long career in comedy, both times in Portland, Maine. The first show was hilarious, the second showed a much darker, angrier, side of this acerbic, ironic, sardonic, brilliant wit.

But, the better story is one from a friend I had in the 1980's who actually got to meet The Man. Seems Mr. Carlin was performing in Augusta, Maine and staying at the Holiday Inn where my friend worked (and where I had worked previously). My buddy was working the night shift when George came in for a drink after his show. As he was leaving the bar he passed by the front desk where my friend was working. Just as he passed my friend looked up and said, "Have a crappy day!"

The comedian stopped, looked over, grinned and just said, "Good one."

I'll miss you, George. Thanks for the laughs.
