My husband and I have lived in our house for 22 years and my next door neighbors and we have endured transformer blues. It seems like the least little thing causes it to blow...squirrels, vines, and other real dangers…after all, Central Florida is the lightening capitol of the world. I always feel sorry for the unsuspecting squirrels. I've never worried about calling the power company because my neighbor was on oxygen so his wife was always ready to call. Unfortunately, the couple died and their nephew has rented the house. So, now it is up to me to make the calls since I know that the renter doesn't know of our transformer blues.
Yesterday, I heard the familiar boom even though there was no rain or lightening. I made the call, got a quick response but was still without power for over an hour. This is really nothing since we were hit by Charlie, Frances, and Jean a few years ago and were without power for days. Anyway, first thing this morning, the power company tree guys were here to cut back the vines. As quickly as the vines grow and with the abundance of squirrels, I'm sure I'll hear the boom throughout the summer.

Aren't there some squirrel aversion gadgets available?
Seems like some of the inventive people out there could come up with perhaps a miniature tape recording of a cat, dog, or hawk to keep the squirrels at bay.

Have you considered purchasing a free-standing generator for such emergencies? It seems to me that it would be an investment in protecting your property and goods, especially perishable goods. Just a thought; an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Respectfully yours, D22007.
