I am a lover of old time country and bluegrass music. I could listen to if for hours. Long before the cross-over country stars of today like Faith Hill, Garth Brooks and even Willie Nelson was the legendary Eddie Arnold who died yesterday in him home in Nashville TN.
Many of his songs deal with unrequited love of a man for a woman. The heartbreak is in the lyrics and conveyed through his melodic voice. "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" comes to mind. "Backroads of My Mind" was also a classic along with "Make the World Go Away." But here is my very favorite:
He’ll Have To Go
Put your sweet lips a little closer to the phone
Let's pretend that we're together all alone
I'll tell the man to turn the jukebox way down low
And you can tell your friend there with you he'll have to go
Whisper to me tell me do you love me true
Or is he holding you the way I do
Though love is blind make up your mind I've got to know
And you can tell your friend there with you he'll have to go
You can say the words I wanna hear while you're with another man
If you want me answer yes or no darling I will understand
Put your sweet lips a little closer to the phone
Let's pretend that we're together all alone
I'll tell the man to turn the jukebox way down low
And you can tell your friend there with you he'll have to go
And you can tell your friend there with you he'll have to go
Goodbye Eddie Arnold

• • Yes, tsk, tsk, I heard of his death — — Eddie Arnold, may you always be remembered!
• • "He'll have to go" — — I liked that song a lot but I recall another man singing it, a baritone. Do you know which singer I'm thinking of?
:-D

Oh man, Eddie Arnold reminds me of my mother. He was her favorite. I do remember the line, "Put your sweet lips a little closer to the phone." And, she loved "Hey good lookin, whatcha got cookin, which was a Hank Williams song. But she played Eddie on her beat up record player.
I'm sorry he's gone, maybe Mom will finally meet him?

Here's another one:
Make the world go away
Get it off my shoulder
Say the things we used to say
And make the world, make it go away
Do you remember when you loved me
Before the world took you away
Well if you do, then forgive me
And make the world, make it go away
Make the world go away
Get it off my shoulder
Say the things we used to say
And make the world, make it go away
Now I'm sorry if I hurt you
Let me make it up to you day by day
And if you will please forgive me
And make the world, make it go away
Make the world go away
Get it off my shoulder
Say the things we used to say
And make the world, make it go away
