What does it take to give it all up, buy a travel trailer and truck and just GO? My good friend is finding out. It is not easy. She keeps saying "It's a lifetime of treasures." She has many treasures from her wedding dishes from 1950 to the antiques she has collected along the way.
She wouldn't be doing this, but her husband had a quadrupal by-pass a few months back and it really scared them. He wants to go before he can't go anymore and she does too. They have sold so much and have so much left to sell.
It really is amazing what a person can gather around them. Every inch of wall was covered with bookshelves and pictures.Every foot of floor was full of furniture both theirs and their parents. The kitchen was a treasure trove of cookie jars, wooden spoons, wrought iron pans, and more dishes than anyone could use in a lifetime. It is becoming evident that they will have to donate much of the treasures. Sometimes one man's treasure is another man's trash. It is sad that she has such great things and cannot get anyone interested in them. She has run ads and made flyers, had sales and she still has so much left.
I think through his trauma of the surgery, her husband has learned what is really important. He wants to experience all he can before his time is up.
She still wants to hold on to the past and is afraid of what the future may hold.
I can relate to her thinking. I once held up a box of pictures and momentos and told my husband that "My whole life is in this box".
I hope she can get her life in a box that will fit in her new camper Home.

I was fixin to write you a birthday message and noticed your blog. Guess I'd missed it. It says exactly how I'm feeling about my husband retiring and us selling or giving away all the "things" that I've collected over the years. I'm gradually boxing it up and it's very hard to let go. Some I'll give to my kids but you know how they are. Not too interested in Mom's old stuff. They will probably wish later that they had it but who knows. So what I don't sell on ebay, I'm just giving to Goodwill, etc. That way at least I can claim it on my income taxes for the year. We have our box on wheels and the truck so we're ready to go. Oh and the furniture! Maybe I'll have an estate sale.
