Bad Cat!
My cats are not so fun today. Late last night I found a baby bunny on my back doorstep. One of them had bitten it's ear. Usually they die right away but this one, eyes still closed, looked pretty strong. It was so young I had to really look to identify it.
I teared up as I stroked it's little quivering body. It sensed someone was there to take care of it. Its new Mom. I searched in vain for the nest. I went online and researched what to do. The eyes open at 6 days so this was a really new baby.
I had seen the mom a few days before in my back yard, standing sentinel to protect her new babies. I put it in a box with soft tissues last night and took it up to my bedroom and put in next to a space heater. I tried to call my local nature center but they didn't open till 10:00 and I had to be at work. So I took the little thing to work with me. I kept it warm with a little space heater and told all my students I had a "Big Surprise". These intercity kids had never seen a bunny so new. Some of the girls teared up as they saw the little spot of blood on its ear.
I called the nature Center and they didn't want it. Said I needed to find the nest and return it because this new they are very hard to keep alive. By days end he was looking a little dehydrated. He didn't make it home. I never found the nest.
I am really PO'd at my cats. I know this is nature's plan but why such a little defenseless bunny???

You gave it some loving beautiful final hours. How tender of you.
I worked in a house with a most gentle, loving golden lab. He & I were great friends. One day, I let him out for his duty. Came back to see him digging his way under a fence for some critter. I stopped it in time. What an awakening to realize my gentle friend had animal instincts.
In a 3rd floor apt., I had an a/c in my bedroom. I got up at the crack of dawn and came home late at nite from work. One weekend, I could hear chirping outside that a/c. Seems a family of birds had built a nest for their babies under the a/c. I took the a/c out of the window because I was worried they were in the a/c. There was a bar which prevented me from seeing them. That was a great hiding place!
It was Sat. nite. Couldn't find any animal control place to help me. Called the fire department, two blocks down. I think I upset their card game. They were damn nasty and said they'd charge my landlord for coming out big time. I was told to deal with it!
Next a.m., I awoke to birds yelling and screaming. What I guessed what that the mom and dad had come to get their babies in flight.
I took the a/c out and the board. Cleaned it. But next weekend, I did the same thing. Some other birds or the same ones had started building a nest again. I couldn't handle the noise and further problems. So I cleaned it out every night when I came home.

Very sad story, but nature seems to be cruel. It's the survival of the fittest. If you had found the nest, the mother might not want to have her baby bunny back.
