The other day a young person asked me how I felt about being old. I was
taken aback, for I do not think of myself as old. Upon seeing my reaction,
she was immediately embarrassed, but I explained that it was an
interesting question, and I would ponder it, and let her know.
Old Age, I decided, is a gift.
I am now, probably for the first time in my life, the person I have
always wanted to be. Oh, not my body! I sometime despair over my body,
the wrinkles, the baggy eyes, and the sagging butt. And often I am taken
aback by that old person that lives in my mirror (who looks like my
mother!), but I don't agonize over those things for long.
I would never trade my amazing friends, my wonderful life, my loving
family for less gray hair or a flatter belly. As I've aged, I've become
more kind to myself, and less critical of myself. I've become my own
friend. I don't chide myself for eating that extra cookie, or for not
making my bed, or for buying that silly cement gecko that I didn't need,
but looks so avante garde on my patio. I am entitled to a treat, to be
messy, to be extravagant.
I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon; before they
understood the great freedom that comes with aging.
Whose business is it if I choose to read or play on the computer until 4
AM and sleep until noon?
I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 60&70's, and if
I, at the same time, wish to weep over a lost love ... I will.
I will walk the beach in a swim suit that is stretched over a bulging
body, and will dive into the waves with abandon if I choose to, despite
the pitying glances from the jet set.
They, too, will get old.
I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again, some of life is just as
well forgotten. And I eventually remember the important things.
Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How can your heart not
break when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when
somebody's beloved pet gets hit by a car? But broken hearts are what give
us strength and understanding and compassion. A heart never broken is
pristine and sterile and will never know the joy of being imperfect.
I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turning gray,
and to have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep grooves on my
face. So many have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair
could turn silver.
As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about what
other people think. I don't question myself anymore. I've even earned
the right to be wrong.
So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has set me free. I
like the person I have become. I am not going to live forever, but while
I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been, or
worrying about what will be. And I shall eat dessert every single day.

Oh, your blog said so well what should be the attitude of all who have reached those "golden" years, whatever they might be. Your thoughts are so similar to mine, but at times I have not quite lived them.
All should learn to live life, enjoy it as much as possible and not lament the inevitable. Your blog is much like, for me anyway, the poem, "When I am Old I will wear Purple", (not sure that I have the title correct, but I am sure that you have heard of it) Reading your blog today has just made my day.

Life is too short to live. Don't waste this life in shading tears. Everyone has problems in his or her life but if there is a problem then there is a solution. Face the situation with a smile on your face, courage in your eyes, hope in your heart and wisdom in your mind.
This will make your way easy towards solution. laugh at your mistakes and praise yourself for learning from them .Share all good experiences, good jokes, good quotations, nice and humorous events and another thing that is worthy to share .We know how much Miseries are there but we believe that shading tears is not the solution so we can minimize their effect with smile at least in our lives...forget all the bad experiences but never loose the lesson u got :)
YOU ARE AS YOUNG AS YOU FAITH
AS OLD AS U DOUBT
........
AS YOUNG AS YOUR SELF-CONFIDENCE
AS OLD AS YOU FEAR
........
AS YOUNG AS YOU HOPE
AS OLD AS YOU DESPAIR

Don't forget the great Satchel Paige's quote "How old would I be if I didn't know how old I was?" I don't know and really don't care.

I agree - I've never been happier or healthier, but I have to admit it upsets me when others refer to my age. It happens amost everyday - someone commenting on how old I am. I don't care what about my age. Why should they?
I think our society fears aging, but only those of us who have "made it" understand the freedom and happiness it brings. Maybe we should just keep it our secret and let those not here, yet, stew about it{:->

This is totally the truth! Wonderfully written and wonderful to live by! We should all take this into our lives and know that we should not let what other people think bother us. I have ruined some of my fun by not wanting to wear a swimsuit in public, and I am not so bad in one, I am just too worried what other people say or think. I will never see these people again in my life and yet I let myself not get into the inviting waters because of it. Live our lives for ourselves! Great job! Wingsofspirit

I should send this to my sister who is turning 52 this next week, she is having such a time of it. LOL Yes, you have written all the right words. We all feel this inside, yet often do not say these very things that are on our minds. Very good and it made me laugh. :)

Well said. My face may have laugh lines and wrinkles, but they speak of a life in the sun and of much laughter. I would rather have that than the 2 hours in the gym everyday, the strict diet, and a fortune spent on cremes, pills, and surgeries. Speaking of surgeries, poor Priscilla and Wayne Newton are walking testimonies against face lifts, aren't they? Wrinkles are more attractive than the stretched and distorted faces they both now have. They paid a high price trying to retain a youthful appearance. There is a time and a season for everything and the trick is to find out what is most enjoyable about each. The saddest thing is to concentrate on the bad of each new phase. Like the new mother who bemoans that her baby is unable to talk and then later wishes her 10 year old would learn to shut up.

I was just down home over Easter and the big tease has been how my mama's husband is "almost 90"; my mama, "almost 70'; and I'm, "almost 50." My mama has told me that as you get to each stage in life you find something to like and enjoy about it.

This was something I needed to hear. My 62nd birthday is about 1 month away and I am so depressed. Feet and knee surgeries have me unable to walk unaided. I have put myself in a wheelchair and my quality of life sucks. I can do nothing by myself and it is getting me down. i have incontinence problems that can, at times, make my life hell. I'm afraid to go to a urologist, because of what he might say. Surgery scares the s___ out of me. But at the same time, maybe I won't have to have surgery. I am in such a funk and can't seem to get myself out. If I could get o that place where how I look isn'[t important enough to keep me from enjowing my life. it all is just "in my face" right now as that new # lurks around the corner.

Absolutely Amazing!!! They can only pray that they are lucky enough to be where we are now, because age WE ALL WILL & when you think about it, it beats the alternative. As my father always says "Para adelante vamos", in spanish, "Forward we all go", meaning good or bad what goes around comes around, and who says getting old has to be bad? We can make our lives as good and rejoiceful as we choose to, AMEN TO YOU!

Oh my gosh, I loved this!!! It made me realize I'm to up tight, I can stay up all night, sleep till noon, have an extra cookie, go out to eat or stay home and cook. My kids are grown, I have the house to myself, no more set dinner times, or other people to clean up after. It's like starting over. I LOVE IT!!!!!

Worth joining eons to read this thread. When I was in my 20s I totally took notice of old people. They either hated life or loved it. I plan to be 109 and am already seeing some of my peers griping about everything. Life is like a dandelion flower to me. Just to live to be old is a miracle. Cars wear out after about 20 and they are made of steel.
I am 50 and love it. My Christian beliefs also help. Count your many blessings!

So true, so true!Nice to see in print what I've been thinking all along as I enter this journey to old age. (I, too, do not think of myself as old.) I stretch my body into that suit and take those vericose veins with me as I jump into the pool and play with my grandkids. Why should I care what others think? The ones who love me, love me as I am. I am a much better person not having to worry about what others think.
Captain Jean-Luc Picard:
Time is a companion that goes with us on a journey. It reminds us to cherish each moment, because it will never come again. What we leave behind is not as important as how we have lived.
