I am amazed by the speed at which women & babyboomers of both sexes are returning to college. I started some research on the subject. Here is what I found.

More middle aged or older women than men are returning to college.

Boomers' motivation for returning to college fall into two main categories:

Going Back To College For Employment Reasons

a major job change was in order

feel that degree counts for more in the job market place than experience counts

tied to career transitions - new job tools

complete immersion in learning, theory and academic communication

current new careers will require much higher math, language, and reasoning capabilities

Going Back To College For Personal Reasons

take it as a personal challenge

babyboomers own more computers that any other age group - allowing them to earn their degrees online

some were able to stay home or able to still work and complete their college degree online in a little more than a year

expand their horizons in a field they truly love

a divorce put them on the "got to do something for me" path

some are just postponing their retirement to gain more education

eight out ten babyboomer say they plan to work at least part time during retirement - so higher education will help

According to census.gov:

The greatest percentage rise in college attendance was by women

The proportions of adults age 25 and older with at least a high school diploma and at least a bachelor’s degree, respectively, in 1947. By 2004, the respective proportions had risen to 85 percent and 28 percent.

Number of baby boomers living in 2030, according to projections; 54.9 percent would be female.

As “baby boomers” age, we should see fewer and fewer “Ozzie and Harriet” families.

For me I just like learning. Maybe it is the age I grew up in. I think I am one of those boomers that never want to GET OUT OF COLLEGE.
