A funny thing happened yesterday when I was standing in line at our Arts Center waiting with a painting to enter in an art show. A man came up behind me and asked the woman at the take-in table if she knew where Gale Craig was. He had a package to deliver. "He told me he would be here."
The woman in charge said, "That's not a man. It's a woman."
He replied, "His name is spelled G-a-y-l-e."
Being an authority on this, I piped up, "It doesn't matter how it's spelled. She's a woman — and she's sitting right over there. "
He looked surprised as he walked over to hand Gale the package.
That is a perfect example of what I wrote about in my amazon.com/shorts
essay, "Gender-Confusing Names." I have one myself.
