It is so frustrating when you have these great ideas and fantastic thoughts, at least I think they are, and they slip, tumble, and evaporate from your mind!!
One year long before I was considered a senior citizen, I took an American Lit. At the end of each class the instructor would give a writing assignment. Since the class was a great distance from home, I would have it practically written in my head, but guess what…I would forget it as soon as I turned into my driveway. Gosh, darn it…what was I going to say? Of course, after a few times, I got smart. I would keep my notepad open with a pen ready to write when I got to a stoplight. This is the only time I looked forward to a red light.
Another time, I was helping my children with a speech they had to make at a family reunion. I didn’t plan to write the whole thing but just give them some ideas. Well, we sat down together and decided to use the “Fruit of the Spirit” as a foundation for their talk. You know…”But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control…” Galatians 5:22-23 Anyway, we were doing very well, thoughts flowing, ideas popping but that was enough for the day. I cleaned up the work area and we all went about doing whatever. My children were middle school aged at the time so they wanted to show Dad what they were going to say since it was his family’s reunion. But guess what? Mom had thrown every thing, I mean everything away. OOPS!! Long story short, they rewrote it and were a hit at the reunion but how could Mom have done such a dumb thing. Oh, well!!
That brings me to the subject of my first Blog on Eons. Last night I had this great idea, in my own mind, as to what I was going to write about. Knew my topic, had all my points and would be ready come morning. Well, something kept saying, “Get up and write this down, at least the idea, or you will forget it in the morning?” They always say you should listen to that little voice but at 1:45 A.M. I convinced myself that I have a great memory. How can I forget it?
Guess what? I have no idea what I had planned to write about…that great topic, all the points…slipped into oblivion and now I need to start taking that stuff. What is it called? Oh, yeah… Ginko Biloba. Does it work? I don’t know…I forgot.
What is that stuff called?

I was going to comment on something you wrote in the first paragraph, but then I forgot. I hear you, though. I have little notepads in every room, in every pocket of every coat. I'm not that dumb, I just can't remember. Right now, I'm writing down you name on a piece of paper so I can find you again.

You're doing better than I. I remember to write things down but when I come to read it, I'm thinking, "What does this mean?" What was I trying to remember. I seem to just write clue words that I think will lead me to the thought; and all I have are words. Better yet, my notes get left at home instead of in my pocket while in town. Or I can't remember where I left my list of things I needed to remember. Although I do find them eventually , once I'm back home.

I found that carrying a small tape recorder helped me. I'd dictate a few sentences or random thoughts at stop lights or when I had a chance and often those few words or phrases were enough to help me fully recapture the thought or organization of thoughts later. I would also transcribe be them onto my computer as soon as possible. I also carry a small Day Timer brand calendar/notebook and try to write everything down in there- appointments, expenses, shopping lists, etc. I find it works better for me than having odd scraps of paper everywhere.

I know exactly what you're talkin' about. I even bought one of those Lil reminders but then felt silly tryin' to use it - just like I thot the lady in the commercial for it looked silly. I do a lot of talkin' to myself and will say something that I wish someone could have heard but go to write it down and I can't remember just how I said it. I guess we're meant to rely on spontaneity.

I have been wondering what the little reminder recorder is called so I can buy one. Some cell phones have it but mine doesn't. My bf is always telling me to make a list. I used to remember everything and had the list in my head. Not now. I make my grocery list and forget to bring it with me to the store. I even lose the tablet I used. I put things away and they are then in the land of the lost. I cant find it or even have a clue where I put it. Especially when I put something away for safe keeping. I forget the worde for things and peoples names. I'm not dumb. I even have a high IQ but you couldn't prove it to me. When I was younger my grandmother told me I should write down my name because I may need it one day. I have mentioned this to my Dr and my neurologist they both were not concerned. I find it very frustrating.

Hi, I'm 85 and I think I'm slow in memory. The V.A. got me started on vitamin B12 a couple years ago and I guess it helps a bit. You have to take that pill every day.
I have a problem with a traffic citation I was charged with in November of 2002. I was not in any way connected with the event but happened to be riding in a city whose bias did not agree with my own set of sport supported school interest. Anyway, the citing officer of the law created a condition on paper which the state then took a look at and developed to conform to law already on the books. I think they call that adaptation. I was subject to arrest and appearance in court. As client of a lawyer I gave my case to I was not consulted at any time prior to the court date. Turns out he made an "arrangement" with the state attorney's office to which I would serve a period of four months probation [they call 'deferred prosecution'] and would not appear before a judge. He convinced me to accept the deal by saying he would waive his fee of twenty five hundred dollars would we go to court. I didn't have that kind of money lying around so I signed the agreement. Since that day the lawyer ran for the position of Circuit Court Judge and was elected. I question the ethics of: (1) the law enforcement officer (2) the lawyer I engaged (3) the people in the States Attorney's Office [for using the 'deferred prosecution' as it is not a point of state law to be administered in that manner] Look again, you who are only starting in the latter part of your lives, if we are already entertainig terrorists in our midst. I'm the son of a cop, the brother of a retired cop, have served in petit juries both civil and criminal AND was empanelled on a Federal Grand Jury while I was still eligible some sixteen years ago.

Great blog, MB. It appears you struck a responsive chord with a few of your peers. I use the notepad in the car as well. Just started using one of those miniature tape recorders. It's safer and more convenient than the notepad. Of course, my problem has been to remember to use the items.

:) I feel your angst! I have to work hard to keep a thought in my head long enough to get it out let alone put it to paper... I write on anything, with anything... lipstick on toilet paper if necessary... hard part is that more often than not, I can't read my own handwriting... I've taken to carrying around a bunch of lined 3x5 index cards and a pen I can rely on... I print... not fleshing out the thought but putting down either a buzz work or a "chapter heading" if you will... when I don't have writing implements, I repeat the idea/thought over and over in my head until it sinks below the oil slick... getting better alla time :) keep on keeping on, sweet soul

I found your blog from the Eons Homepage and just had to share the book I just finished reading. It's called "Where Did I Leave My Glasses? The What, When and Why of Normal Memory Loss". I found it to be well-researched and very readable. Did you know we have many different kinds of memory? Some we remember; some we have to work to retain and some which just evaporates? We are all in this boat together! Now where did I leave my glasses??????
