This is my very first blog posting. I just got a New Sound System today. For my ears. Even though I've known I had a high frequency hearing loss for a while, I just couldn't take that step of getting hearing aids. The whole idea of hearing aids made me feel "old," which at 59 I like to think I'm not.
Last week I got my first pair, Oticon Safrans. I felt like I was wearing a fishbowl over my head -- they just felt so invasive. My audiologist had suggested the Oticon Deltas when I first went in, but I opted for the Safrans. Wrong choice!!!
I went back today and got the Deltas. Wow!!! I can't tell you how much more I like them. I went into work and was showing everyone my "cool" new sound system -- the Deltas. They feel better, look better, and perform much better -- for me. I like to think I'm pretty fashion-savvy -- well, these Deltas are my dream come true. They come in 17 colors, including bright red, orange, and an animal print!!! You can get extra "shells," and wear them like jewelry. I just love the whole idea. I'm going to tell my mom about them, because I think they are terrific. I know I sound like a commercial, but I'm so relieved that I can hear well again (things sound "normal") and that I don't feel old with them. BTW, Huey Lewis of Huey Lewis & The News is a spokesperson for the Delta "sound system." So does that make me "cool," or what? Smiles! Ri

The EEs were expensive (about $5000 for the pair). What I did was put money in my flex spending over 2 years (2006 and 2007) and get them right at the end of the first year -- paying for one on 12/29/2006 and the other on 1/2/2007. (This means I have to stay working for the rest of the year to earn the $$ to cover the flex spending I've already spent!) Anyway, for me it was really a "quality of life" issue — I'll forego dinners out and some new clothes and trips for a couple years to be able to hear well again. It's more than worth it.

Re ur flex spending account – I’m so lucky to have that benefit. Bad neck issues since neck arthritis runs in family and had started for me in ’89, and that’s the same year I was rear ended. Neck traction has come a long long way, and I was able to buy the $479 home neck traction for home. OMG, all the years of misery, and times on disability. Quality of life issue is right on.
