While anything we write on sites like this is their (the host's) 'property', it is first your own intellectual property, and regardless of what anyone says, any site that is hosting your writing cannot share it with external sites without your permission, or alter it. The hosting site can delete content that violates its terms of use, but that's IT. Giving it to others outside of the site is inappropriate and infringes upon your copyright, as well as your right to privacy as a member of their community.

Wrong is wrong, but when you stop and think about it, how many times is it caught, versus not caught? We lost a member who was posting copyrighted materials and not giving credit. So, it happens all over. Best advice I can offer is to not post something you are afraid of someone else using, or infringing on. Or, in the case of a photo, a watermark across it discourages people, also.

well, that might be true, since you can right-click, copy and paste anything you want and hope you don't get busted, but the copyright office says that anything you create, including digital content, is indeed already copyrighted, even if it hasn't been officially registered with them.

Registering the work doesn't create the copyright.

The copyright office recommends that you register your creative copyrighted work with them so that you have an official document to produce if you decide to sue someone.

any web site such as this one that hosts member's profiles DOES NOT HAVE THE AUTHORITY OR RIGHT to share that content with outside websites or use it for personal or monetary gain without your knowledge or permission. any eons staff member going around implying to fellow members that eons can do whatever they want with the stuff members put here is doing members a disservice, as well as dispensing incorrect information.

I just started beta testing the registration process at the copyright office...soon everyone will be able to register their copyrighted works online, which is a lot faster than paper registration. all registration does is produce an official copy of the copyright you already enjoy when you post your intellectual property online, to ease the legal process. Your property is YOUR property, regardless of who hosts it.

Think of your blog, pictures, etc. as a boat that a marina owner is letting you park at their marina. it's still your boat right? just because it is parked at their marina doesn't mean it automatically becomes their boat. and they certainly can't let other people use your boat without your permission. and you are ultimately responsible if someone steals your boat and gets in an accident, not the marina owner. the marina owner can tell you where to park your boat, and if it becomes infested with rats or something, they can boot you from the marina, in the same way as rons can delete content that violates their TOU - but that's IT.

My point (which Fartte took out of context) is that the world wide web works by copying images. Every image you see on a web page has already been downloaded into your computer. It is a legal copy that you are free to use for your own enjoyment. *HOWEVER* that doesn't mean you can reuse the image for another purpose without the copyright owner's consent.

The personals page is very comprehensive in that members decide which they want to display and what not. I write myself and am cautious about posting things on the net...Things I post are generally not suitable for periodicals or are otherwise unlikely to be published ( or I just don't care so much about them...)
What upset me more about your situation was having someone dole out your screen name and location at the other site... It seems to me it is like giving out your cyber " home address " and I think most people with an ounce of sense would not do that any more than they would encourage other eons members to randomly post THEIR email or other cyber addresses....
Gettin off my soapbox soon....I had a phone call several months ago and was treated to a recording of an Al Pacino soundalike calling me by name and then going thru the scarface dialog...Later when I signed on to the net and got mail, an aquaintance had emailed me a note telling me how funny it was to do that to me and that I should give the website all my friends names and numbers so they could have a similar celebrity call....Boy did that Piss me off something fierce.. I called the guy that did it and told him a few choice things and advised that if I started getting spam calls on my cell phone ( living aboard I don't have a land line) and had to change my number he'd better get out his checkbook....He apologized and admitted he thought it was a funny thing and didn't think about some of the possible consequences.....and offered to buy me a new phone and contract etc right then...
I still get hot under the collar about that kind of stuff. As it turned out the website was innocuous and went out of business and I never had a problem....but the point is it could have been a real mess.
I guess the point is that some people have different values, mores, concepts of etiquette etc and some people just don't think...That will probably never change.
