Wow cochlear implants are having a phenomenal impact on my field of work (deaf education). It is so exciting to see kiddos who have NO hearing go to within normal limits of hearing with this surgery. However, I also enjoy sign language. The deaf community seems adamant that sign language remain. I hope so. They have created a term for people who want them to talk, become hearing, or give up signs (audism). That is interesting. Although it is important to learn to talk the best you can, it is also important to be a part of the deaf community. OOPs I may be guilty of some audism with that last statement, but my heart also says.....Sign on......
