This commercial started about a month ago. I hate it so much that I have to leave the room or change the channel if it comes on. I was interested to see if other people found it creepy, so I googled "creepy Gap ad" and parts of the "lyrics", and found a lot of discussion about this particular ad all over the net. People either love it (mostly women with children or incipient pedophiles) or loath it. I am firmly in the "loath" camp. The stupid cheerleader lyrics are an Earworm that gets stuck in your head and makes your ears bleed.

Lyrics:
Formal attire, officially retired. Hey mom and dad, guess what? 1,2,3,4 I'm not going to wear it anymore. I love my comfy sweater, I love my comfy sweater. How cute are these boots? How cute are these boots? Forget those pearly dresses. Forget those pearly dresses. Or talk to the moose, ah, ah, a moose!

I have been trying to figure out what exactly it is about this video I find so creepy. I dislike the drum beat behind the dancing. I find the clothing garish. I do not find the children particularly sexualized, so that isn't it. I think its the attitude of the children. They aren't being playful, they are being demanding. That doesn't seem to cover it either. There is a sister commercial with teen/twenty-somethings that is formatted the same way, but is very ignorable.

Some commentators find the children too happy and fake or "plastic". I find the screaming grating. Not exactly melodic holiday fare. It is also very contrived (Well, duh, it is a commercial). Tomboys who reject frilly dresses for sweaters and tights do not care how "cute" their boots are.

I had hoped blogging this would help me put my finger on why I hate this ad so much. No luck. I guess, like the Supreme Court, I just know it when I see it.
