Are you as tired as I am about all the labels attached to people today? We have labels with hyphens like African-American, Native-American, Asian-American and so on. Why can't we just be Americans?

And in the midst of the politics we have labes for every kind of Democrat and Republican you can imagine. Pro this or anti that. Conservative Liberal Progressive Reactionary. And if you don't conform to whatever rules someone lays down you can't be considered genuine in anything. The truly sad part of it is that the labels are attached to everything I may believe in even if not true. For example, I believe in a woman's right to choose to become pregnant or not. I also believe that she has the right to abort that baby if she chooses that. now having said that I will be pigeon-holed by many into believing all sorts of other things that people who oppose that view may wish to label me with. And to make matters worse those who agree with me will automatically assume I accept other things they may believe in.

It is the assumptions that are made about what that particular choice of options might be that really bother me. People refuse to accept that someone can hold a point of view and not be a reactionary. I believe that most of the reactions being bandied about today are based on fear. Fear that someone will make choices for us that we do not want. Fear that we will not be able to carry out our chosen wishes because of laws that are passed.

Our melting pot has a hole in it. We choose to make everyone dwell in whatever little slot fits our preconceived notions. The problem is Tab A doesn't fit in slot B. We are headed for a Revolution of major proportions. I just hope this time we can get it right.
