What's your point of view? You can got to the historical societies for old letters, journals and other items of that site. Is there a State archives that might be helpful? University of New Mexico library for sure ought to have a wealth of material. Some of the old families might have items to share?
You could perhaps trace a landmark and come up with a story around it. Sort of a Bridge over San Luis Rey thing. Or some variation on that theme. I have a cousin who wrote a Children's Book around an iron skillet that had been used by 5 generations of women in her family. Old house or Church or?
Same thing could be done around an animal - and for New Mexico that would have to be about a horse?
UNM might be able to answer if there are state archives. When in doubt google. If you can get the name of even one 'character' from the era i bet you can find a good deal of info online.
