I was in the farm/ranch store the other day picking up a mineral block for my wife's horse. In front of me in the checkout line was a woman buying many bags of corn feed and she was telling the clerk all about how she put the feed out for the deer and elk to visit her yard because she enjoyed having them in her yard to view and photograph.
So this bugs me because there are plenty of deer and elk around to go see them at anytime anybody wanted to, plus they are wildlife and providing food just encourages a population that is already over grown the valley.
Normally what people do never surprises me and I usually just let it go and go about my business. But, this time I couldn't seem to stop myself and opened my mouth....and said..."why don't you take that $100.00 you just spent on wildlife food and donate to the local food bank so there might be some children that will not go to bed hungry this week"
After an uncomfortable silence the woman told the cerk that "maybe some people should just mind there own business"
And, it hit me that she was completly right! Who was I to judge this woman or question her actions. Maybe just that morning she had donated thousands of dollars to a food bank or some other worthy charity. We can't all save the world you know, just do our little part and maybe collectively make a difference.
I did catch up to the lady in the parking lot and apologized. I'm sure she went home thinking what a "do-gooder" nut job I was!
Sometimes you just can't help yourself to have diarrhea of the mouth and constipation of the brain.
Lesson learned...until the next time!

We do little in the way of a favor to wild life when we take the wild away. In lots of places, trapping and relocating critters is illegal - the new animals disturb the existing balance.
Sometimes favors are not favors.

One of my favorite things to do at summer camp, a million years ago, was to go down to the meadow and wait inconspicuously....to watch as the deer came to the salt lick that the camp cook put out for them...Not food, a block of salt. And the deer were beautiful, too.
I hope you are right and she donates money to the local food bank. No one should go hungry....ever.

I agree- acclimating wildlife to constant food sources is not healthy- for them or for us. We are bound and determined to keep encroaching on what little natural habitats they have left in some places.
Hopefully the woman has done something for her fellow humans as well as the wildlife in her area.
Hunger- either in wildlife or humans- is unacceptable.
