Our grandparents(1882 to 1890) were not the most educated but they were hardworking people that built and shaped this country by starting roads and towns and cities. They passed their work ethic on to our parents who did receive better education than they did and in the process strove harder to attain their goals and to say thanks to their parents.
Our parents were faced with the 'great depression' which made too many of them with maybe not too much education, But made them strong willed, strong of character, and strong of work ethic. They were hard workers just like their parents. Both sets of parents also lived thru wars and they knew how to get things done.
Us boomers started coming along in 1946 thru 1959. Also in this time frame another series of events happened - modernization AND what would become the computer. Schools got a whole lot better and us boomers did get a much better education (my parents saw to it that I did). By the early 60's as us boomers were getting educated the workforce still relied on 'were you capable of doing the work and putting in an honest day for your pay', ie - would you show up on time and work.
Today the emphasis is on education(which is not wrong) But what about experience. Age is now looked at as disabling as opposed to 'good you have exp to do the job'. After I turned 50 I felt in a too large way 'Persona Not Grata' and my exp was met with scorn instead of 'just what we were looking for' and forget the fact that I did have an AA because I didn't have a BA I was met with more scorn 'whatsa matter you couldn't finish it'.
Where I work now I am the oldest at 62 - the mgr is 42 and does respect me, but the rest are under 25 and cannot keep up with me and catch on to common things that fast and seem bewildered - two of them can't even get out of 1st gear.
Did we cripple our kids by providing them too much or were the things that we invented to produce better, faster results now allowing them to think that they don't have to work that hard and to not even have the ethic that we were brought up with.
