I don't know about anyone else, but one of the last things I want to do when I try to enjoy Eons is block pop-up after pop-up that asks you to take a sex survey. Personally I first thought it would be okay since it was Eons sanctioned, but when it started going into my own private personal life I said the hell with this crap.
Since I do know Eons does monitor groups, I hope that they take the message to heart, also I know Eons is desperate for new ways to make money to be viable but the annoying pop-ups must go since this was promised to the members when Eons first started up. That I do remember, unless this is another exception like the age dropping from 50 to 13. The lost people, good people over that fiasco even when the members said a resounding NO to the dropping of age and it was done anyway. What did it get them, a semi-massive exodus of some of the best members this site had.
I really do not believe those big names that were first drawn to Eons hung around much when it was found out that a 13 year old could see their thoughts and writings. I know I wanted to leave but was talked out of it by some good people who closed their groups and verified who the person was. I had to take one of my groups private because of the adult topics that we do discuss, and do not need to see it splattered all over Google and any search engine who could find Eons.
The over all idea of being located by search engines are a good idea, bu it should have been left up to the group manager as to whether or not to have everything that is discussed splattered on all the search engines, that is the the promise of never having the annoying pop-ups, this never comes down the pipe to anyone, unless they know where to find the sometimes cryptic and hidden messages posted.
I know that I have seen that group once, it is a shame I did not bookmark or add to my groups because I have no idea where the hourly updates are kept or what other things that go against the promises made when Eons was first started. We have found out the hard way that the top dog does not listen or heed to the members so why is it so hard to find that along with other vital "groups" that seem to know what is going down.
Sorry once again for my ranting about this, but I have been with Eons almost from the very beginning, less than a month since the introduction of Eons to the "Over-50" folks, I know that was the biggest draw, along with the promises to those who were joining this online community for the over-50 crowd. I do understand all too much of economics and that you have to always find ways to be a viable non-commercial website. Too much economics classes in college, since an Accounting Degree I had to almost have an Econ Class almost every semester. But the pop-ups are way over the edge when it comes to good taste. Even as the outside economy has struggled, the web economy has thrived in specific areas, and I did read the Boston Globe article about Eons, as well as seeing the rebuttal in one of my groups. But at least have the good sense to keep the pop-ups out of our faces and stick with what you have been doing is seeking out decent viable advertising. That is something I am sure everyone could live with that because both my Firefox and Internet Explorer (I have always labeled it Exploder with good reason because of the lack of security Microsoft has for the browser), does not block all those pop-ups because there are always two to three at a time and overloads the pop-up blocker. Those pop-ups if Eons ever does keep up with browser security (and I am nearly always security conscious) do poke huge holes in the security of the web browser no matter how well intentioned the pop-ups may well be at this point.
Personal and Web security is compromised by those annoying pop-ups we get bombarded with here on Eons. No matter what the promises if you do not catch it there are plenty of websites that will for you. I do need to say it Eons by allowing those annoying pop-ups have compromised everyone security by allowing such a thing to happen. Unfortunately I get at least one phone call from a company every night that their security has been compromised because it was found that something as innocent as a pop-up has exploited someone's web browser, no matter how up to date they keep everything there is a hole with those pop-ups. I know Eons can not afford a lawsuit of allowing such a thing to happen to the company. But they have opened that can of worms.
To date the only group that I have not seen those pop-ups show up, yet has been the group that I had to mark private. I have found one way around a lot of the ads for Firefox and that is getting a program called Ad-Blocker Plus. I was just told about the program from another member and still keeps my faith in using the Firefox web-browser and keeping up with internet security.
Add-On: There is a website for extras to increase the security for the FireFox web-browser it is: view link
