Last week, for the first time in over a year, I started walking without any aid. No crutches, no cane, no hiking poles.

It had been 10 weeks since I had my right hip replaced, and things couldn't have been going better. After three PT sessions, I could feel the muscles around my hip growing strong.

But the biggest motivator was hearing my physical therapist say that there was nothing physically keeping me from being able to walk on my own two feet.

So, I did it. I left my hiking poles in the car and walked the quarter mile from the garage to my office. No pain. Just a few tight muscles, especially the front muscles on my hip formerly known as my "good hip." (I'm afraid the OA in that hip is going to force a name change at some point).

Two nights ago, my wife and I took my mother out to a local park for a picnic. She hadn't noticed that I was walking without any support, so I couldn't resist calling it to her attention:

"Look, Mom. No hands."
