Why is it so hard to quit yo-yo dieting, excessive smoking/drinking, compulsive shopping and a whole host of other self destructive behaviors?
The unknown.
We resist change when we don't know what will happen to us. We have an internal thermostat that is set on not changing and keeping us in familiar experiences. We know how to handle what we are used to doing. Yep, we know what to expect.
Change can be difficult but not changing can be more difficult. It can be exhausting.
Give yourself a goal, a well thought out action plan, accountability and feedback to increase your chances of successfully changing what is bothering you.
Instead of thinking of what you will be depriving yourself of, concentrate on what you will be adding to yourself. You will be giving something up but more importantly you will be gaining something new. A gift of change.
