We tried something a bit creative last year that has worked out well.

We have a Dallas four bedroom brick 1960s home that is about 2,200 sf. No kids, just the two of us.

Last season, we had our old HVAC system replaced with a Trane -- new cooling and new heating, the works. We also had its size increased from 4 tons to 5 tons.

In addition, since our master bedroom windows can't be seen from the street, we put a one ton window unit there.

During the day, we run the Trane. Just before we go to bed at night, we turn off the Trane, turn on the window unit, and close the bedroom door.

The temperature inside the house does not increase by much during the night. The bedroom stays wonderfully cool.

These two changes have reduced our electricity bill by almost 2/3rds. And when we have guests over and the oven and range top are going full blast, the increased tonage of the central unit keeps the house perfect!
