When I was in grade school I remember growing potato plants, the white potato plants were nice but the sweet potato plants were somewhat variegated and really beautiful. Of course these plants did not last long and the potatoes soon rotted in the water, but they were fun (and pretty) while they lasted. However, one of my favorite veggie plants was the carrot plant because when it started to grow, the little flowers looked like Queen Anne’s lace. There are a couple in the photo.

I guess that many think of Queen Anne’s lace as a weed, I think of it as a flower, but the reason could be that I don’t have a garden that I have to keep clear of weeds. It is easy to start a carrot plant; just cut off about 1-½ inches of carrot top and put it in a shallow dish, a shallow soup dish is perfect, put some small stones in the dish, add some water and voila!, a carrot plant. It takes a while for the plant to get leafs and blossoms, but it is fun to watch the progress. Like most veggie plants of this type, after blooming it will only give you several weeks of pleasure--but that is all you need to feel the joy of growing.
