The place I rented is beautifully decorated in typical Mexican classic style, fully functioning kitchen, a barbie on which I cooked a kilo of fillet of Marlin in foil. To die for! My wife bought the fish fresh, locally for around $7 a kilo. She also bought a kilo of fresh local strawberries for $2. And a fresh chicken, divided into pieces, for around $3.50
So when we cooked the fish it was like no fish we had tasted for the last 20 years. And when we cooked the chicken over the BBQ it had this amazing flavour! Delightful. Also the strawberries. We noted that delicious king prawns are not expensive either. Most of the restaurants in town, and there are quite a few, could be classed as fine to gourmet, from around $8 to $14 a plate. Beer $1.80 a bottle.
Attractions include surfing, body boarding, fishing trips, and you can go on a 6 hour cruise to a nearby island on a 40' luxury catamaran for $90. Horse riding too, about $28 per person.
So, that's the Nayarit Riviera for the third time. The house cost us $110 per night and sleeps 4. It is practically opposite the iguana sanctuary so it is not surprising that we found that we had a guest living behind the fridge, a young iguana about 2 feet long. I just mainly lay around on the lounger reading The Sirens of Baghdad, or at the Buddha bar, or cooking our own fine dining and wine in the kitchen. Son and daughter passed time at the main square where all the young people gather. There is no fear of feral teens here. It's totally laid back; quite a lot of expats, especially Canadians, surfer guys n gals. Most of the locals have learned excellent English.
Well, I was getting worried it would all be spoilt, but my niece told us that she knows personally 30 virgin beaches in the area.
So, the wife and I are pretty much in agreement that this is where we'll buy a house to retire to, or more likely, buy a piece of land and build an eco-house on it. Making part of it a holiday cottage will give us some rental income, so it is not a bad idea.
This morning I am breakfasting on Jaca fruit (Jackfruit) - delicious. Only available in Nayarit state unfortunately.
