Sunrise, sunset
Swiftly fly the years
One season following another
Laden with happiness and tears
After viewing some spectacular pictures of sunsets, I started thinking about what a significance sunsets have had in my life.
First is their breath-taking beauty. The rich colors infuse me with a warmth that is undeniably comforting. They are awe-inspiring . . . . heaven-sent if you will.
Next is their pure power. A power that seems to transcend this sphere and stretch its arms into another one. They are life enriching.
Then there is their ability to cause me to think, to contemplate, to ask the tough questions. Why am I here? Am I really almost 60 years old? Does that qualify me as an “old woman” (because I certainly don’t feel old)? {smile}
Ah, sunsets. Their importance was forever etched into my very being on August 27, 2003. That is the day my mom died after a courageous battle with cancer. It was a rainy day . . . and at that moment that she took her last breath, there was a clap of thunder and I couldn’t help but say: “She has arrived!”
Even more moving was the sunset that evening as we were heading back home from the Hospice House. It was the most magnificent I’ve ever witnessed . . . it filled the sky with bright oranges . . . and it seemed to radiate and envelope us as we traveled in the night. It gave me a great sense of peace.
Here are some of my favorite sunsets . . .
