2012 Revisited
While on the phone obtaining season tickets, I was asked the date of my credit card. "2012," I said.

"Oh, that's exciting?" she said.

"Why?"

"Well because that's when Nostradamus predicts the end of everything."

After I hung up, I thought about what she said and I decided to make a counter prediction. 2012 will see the detection of another civilization and further study will reveal that this other civilization possesses an FTL interstellar infrastructure (communication and travel take place at speeds faster than light). This discovery will be a seismic event so great that future calendars will call it Day One of Year One

Not just Nostradamus, but the Mayan calendar and Jack Van Impe are predicting the same thing. End of days, Dec 21, 2012!

Interesting thing is that in the last century, Nostradamus was supposed to have predicted the end of everything at a different time. 1997 I believe.

Predictions have strange ways of coming true. Probably the most famous are the Crusades. They were prompted by the belief that Christ would return to Earth in the year, 1000 AD. Since the expectation was that he would first appear in Jerusalem, everyone wanted to go there. Unfortunately, the Saracens controlled the city. The Crusaders drove them out and held the ground for a while. Throughout that time, they never saw Christ but they did see other things: perfumes, spices, silks. Eventually, they were driven out of Jerusalem, but they never forgot what they saw and they wanted more. They were willing to do almost anything to get it: pay through the nose, cross dangerous seas, explore foreign lands. The world that came from all this no way resembled the world of 1000 AD.
