It's Election Day in the U.S. and the world is watching. This election is being discussed here in Mexico as well. I am determined not to be glued to the TV today.
As much as I hate politics, this election has me excited because it has yanked my country out of an apathetic state and mobilized people. The sheer force of this action is exciting and attention-grabbing. I like to look at what moves people to act, and what galvanizes people. Natural disasters have been at the top of the list lately, but now the disaster of the economy and other issues have spurred my people to take decisive action. The outcome is yet to be seen.
We are living during interesting times, and these times will not settle soon. As we hurtle toward 2012, it is becoming ever more intense. While some countries quietly get on with it, others are noisily wrestling for change, and the common folk are caught in the middle. This is nothing new. The common folk are the meat in the sandwich, the ones that get gobbled up by greed and power mongering. It has always been this way. It is with the common folk that my heart resonates. It is the common folk that drive the machinery, that actually produce more than they consume.
The common folk can't consume much because their wages will not allow that. Therefore, they are expendable and replaceable. This is sad, yet the real power lies with the common folk. I love them. I listen to them, I live with them, and they are kind and good. They work hard and keep it simple.
Just random thoughts on this historic day...I pray for the commoners. They produce the strongest children, one of whom is a presidential candidate.
P.S. correction in the last sentence..."one of whom is the next President of the United States!"
