Hey Everyone! I just got back from New Orleans. I was invited to visit after I invited an evacuee from hurricane Gustuv. Sandra and her son were forced to leave their home and put on a bus to who knows where. They ended up in our town. I live in NW Alabama and this was the first shelter that had room.
I met Sandra (59) and her son at the shelter. The only complaint they had was sandwiches on top of sandwiches. She said she would give anything for some rice and beans. I brought her home and we made a huge pot of both. I hiked up my MoTown and had her dancing in my kitchen.
We took the food back to the Red Cross Shelter and fed over 50 people who were thankful for a taste of home. She made me promise to come and visit. When I lost my job, I called her and asked if she was serious. Yes she said. I drove to Birmingham where I spent an hour with my Marine son and he took me to the train station. I got on, met up with a friends daughter, I had substitute taught her when she was in High School, who was taking photography in Alabama Univ. and we did a 4 day trip. It was awesome. We were treated so well. We had turkey necks (a first for me) when we got there. Troy, her son took us on a tour of the french quarters and other areas.
My friend Sandra is getting better. She has been very sick with diabeties heart trouble and other problems. But she was so much better and glad to have company when we came.
I feel that I have been sort of adopted into her family for taking care of her for a day while she was here in Alabama. She made me promise to come back. And I will.
