• • While the official celebration for New York's 400th birthday celebration does not begin until next year, a number of Dutch officials have been spotted in The Big Apple — — at events held to honor the city's rich Dutch heritage.
• • The celebration will recognize Henry Hudson's journey to the New World in 1609 — — more than 80 years after other European explorers landed at New York without [heh-heh-heh] capitalizing on their venture. The Dutch commissioned Henry Hudson's expedition. His boat was called "The Half Moon."
• • With nearly 25,000 current city residents claiming to be of Dutch heritage, and with many organizations devoted to those with Dutch ancestry [such as The St. Nicholas Society], expect there to be on display a great number of artifacts and historical items regarding the roots of the largest American city. The New York Times said among the items headed to New York for next year's celebration are papers documenting the $24 sale of Manhattan Island by the indigenous tribes to Dutch settler Peter Minuit — — along with additional materials describing the lives of the area's first Dutch settlers.
• • Yesterday I took $24 to the supermarket to see what I could buy. Smoked salmon cost me $15, a bottle of non-dairy coffee lightener was $5, two bananas were $1, and I had enough left for a few Ginger Gold apples. Twenty-four dollars does not go very far in 2008, does it?
• • New Yorkers can't wait until it's 2009, though, because the festivities are sure to be memorable.

And their stories, well, frugal yes, pioneers certainly, but bang for the buck meant heading out west to sell land to the Indians. Mine were one of the first to bring whiskey, horses and women to Kentucky, not necessarily in that order.
And Mae, yes, I'm sure that Jeff and EONS Tower are most gratified by your contributions!
