I volunteered at the local Obama headquarters yesterday for a couple of hours. The HQ is not "official", like in one of those rented places that the campaign pays for, purely volunteer. Miracles is actually a black owned barber shop in a part of town formerly know as Gallows Hill, for obvious reasons. It has since become known as "the hill". It has played a significant part in our history during the lawless years of hatred, thus it's name, and during the sixties when we began to wake up a bit to the values of this country. To see it play such a role in another "good" historic event brings tears to my eyes.
I'm rather lazy, plus I do have some physical "complications" thus I volunteer for those easy jobs. My job yesterday was to just sit there, register any one that came by, hand out more forms to the kids, and even elderly that were actuallly out trying to register voters.
During those two hours I chatted with so many marvelous people, young people, middle-aged people, older people, black, white, male and female.
I was so proud to see this day! Though hate is trying to rear it's ugly head, sometimes even in the name of faith, we will continue on, we will make this the country of eqaulity, and freedom. We will not give up -- Yes we can!
